iPod Volume: iTunes vs Headphones

Does anyone know a way of fixing the problem where if you boost the volume on a quiet track in iTunes it's massively louder through the headphones on the iPod?

It's the only thing that really bugs me about my iPod: I get the tracks sounding identical through iTunes on my PC, and they sound fine when played through the data port on the bottom when connected to my Klipsh iGroove or car connector.

However, when I listen through headphones on the iPod, any tracks I've boosted the volume on about blow my eardrums out!

So far the only workaround I've found is to manually fix the volume levels on the CD tracks through Adobe Audition and then re-import them into iTunes, but with over 1,200 CDs in my collection that isn't something I want to have to do for them all!

I have a Touch but I think there's a similar setting in all iPods - check out settings/options, there should be a sound check and also a volume limit option. Play about with those.

Personally, I don't like to boost the volume of the file as it's altering the way it's meant to be heard. If I can't hear it, I turn up the volume. Seems a much less complicated solution...

If you use Jailbreak, there's an app which sorts this out called something like "Voice fix 1.1.4".

Just in case anyone else has the same issue: use the iVolume application to get all tracks sounding a similar volume.

Takes a long while to run (50 hours to process 13,500 tracks), but the results are well worth the time.
