Best Manufacturer for TV's?
ScubaSteve21
06-05-2008
Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone could advise me the best manufacturer for an LCD HDTV? I have been looking at the obvious ones:

Samsung
LG
Phillips
Panasonic
Not Sony - don't want a Sony.

Out of those which is the best? Or is there another brand you would recommend?

There isn't a best manufacturer. It depends on your criteria of size, features, price and so on. If one company produced the best tv's across the board based for every target buyer all the others would be out of business.
All the main manufacturers (and some of the others) make TV's that could be could the best on same basis but you need to refine things a bit.

As you've already decided you don't want the best (Sony) then Panasonic is the next best, the others are well behind, and don't even consider a Philips!.

At this moment in time probably I'd pick the Samsung. But you could say i'm slightly biased as I have a 37" Samsung.

Most LCD screens are made by Samsung anyway.

Even if this were true it would not mean that much because the video processing is at least as important as the screen.

The reason why good TVs handle SD so much better than poor ones is because the quality of the processing is so much better - little to do with he screen itself.

IMO Samsung are the best value for money and for your budget I think this is an excellent set. It looks elegant with the gloss black surround and the picture quality is superb, especially on SKY.

Prices are very competitive

I am a tv aerial engineer by trade, I see hundreds of tv's a week and I chose this set myself after 2 months of research and looking at other peoples sets. IMO it out performs a Sony/Panasonic on SD picture quality and is only slightly behind on HD.

I say, overall, Sony and Samung are probably the best manufacturers at the moment. However, Samsung make the Lcd panels for Sony, are generally cheaper than Sony and look much better than Sony TV's. You can't beat Samsung's gloss black finish.

For your price range, I would recommend the Samsung LE37R87. A fantastic set that is dropping in price at the moment (Currently around the £550 mark) due the new range Samsung's coming out now.

Actually some Sony panels are made by S-LCD, a joint venture between Sony and Samsung, they aren't made by Samsung (although Samsung have one more share in the company than Sony).

Many panels are now sourced elsewhere as well, and (from what I've heard) Sony may be moving to use Sharp LCD panels.

Although I have always been a Sony Fan & until recently always purchased their TV's I have to say that Samsung Take some beating especially viewing HD sources, I personaly feel Sony may have the SD edge on TV's like the 3500 but then only slightly.

My 40" Samsung LE40M86BDX gives stunning HD picture Quality when fed with Sky HD, Blu ray & HD DVD & IMHO the Sony lags behind.

The only downside is the Sound Quality due to very small speakers, however it's fine for normal TV viewing & can be tweaked via the built in Equaliser, I mostly listen through my home cinema kit so the TV speakers are muted anyway.

The "M" Version of the Samsungs is a better TV than the "R" & "N" variants.

The M series is by far the better spec TV, but due to the OP's price range of £600 top end, I felt that the R series would be better. If money was no object then I'd be going for the F series of the new 6 series. And, Sony have indeed set up a deal with Sharp to use their panels, but as far as I'm aware they're still going to be using Samsung/S-LCD panels as well.

Yes of course you are correct about the OP budget But the LE37M87BDX can now be picked up for less than £600;

That's a hell of a find mate, fair play! Haven't seen any much below £700. Will have to bookmark that site, me thinks.

Philips are pretty good picture quality wise. Its just the reliability of some recent products that would make you think twice (dieing just out of 12month warranty is a nice party feature). Although if you buy from John Lewis you get a 5 year warranty anyway.

Both samsung and LG.Philips LCD had a 22% share of the LCD market as of April 2006, (ok, fine its two year old info... bite me).

Panasonic for me. Much better scaling and processing, which is the key to watchable SD, than the other manufacturers operating in the cheep end of the market( like sony, samsung, phillips and so on), on the other hand Panasonic's tend to handle HD just as well. Pioneer are the kings of modern TV's but you will pay a premium for it.

LCD or Plasma doesn't make much of a difference if any these days. it really is all about the electronics driving it. Thats the reason never buy a Samsung unless i'm only ever going to watch HD on it, even then i could think of better TV's for HD. I've had a few samsung TV's in and almost straight out of my house.

When I purchased my TV I could have picked any model I wanted up to £1500 budget I set myself, I spent many weeks in numerous outlets to try & find the set I wanted, I firstly started looking at Sony/Panasonic but frankly the picture quality in HD simply could not hack it compared to the Samsung I purchased. The Philips sets came a close second but given the lack of CS they were discounted! So needless to say I'm very pleased with my Samsung LE40M86BDX

Got a SAMSUNG 50" Plasma - 4 years old - no problems but sound quality very poor. I purchased a AV amp to get around this.

Also got an LG 42" LCD, 2 Years old no problems - sound good too.

Aslo have a Panasonic 42" Plasma - 2 years old no problems - sound ok too.

I think most popular makes should be ok because most of the screens will be from the same factory and re-badged. Either Chinese or Korean.

I rather suspect the OP has probably found a telly in the four years since the post you quoted appeared.

What the heck have you restarted a post from 2008?
Any info from posts from 2008 will hardly be relevant in 2012

Or do you just want to poke Nigel Goodwin?
