Is it possible to change an existing BT line to a different number?

I currently have two different BT phone numbers in my house - the main one and one I had installed upstairs for the internet. I had the second one installed well before broadband came on the scene so I opted for a different phone number so I could use the dial-up internet while keeping the main number free at the same time.

I'm looking to get Sky multiroom in the upstairs room which would need to be connected to the main house number. Is it possible to get BT to change the additional line in that room to the main phone number? If so, what does it cost and how do I go about it?

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

I used to have the same - and then just adjusted the wiring at the main socket when I ceased one line. I then had 4 sockets on the one line instead of 3 on one line and the fourth on the other. No cost.

We have had both set-ups.

We did at one time have two lines and both with different numbers.

We also had two lines with the same number.

We could still use dial-up internet on the one line keeping the other line free to make and receive calls even when both lines had the same number.

The only problem that arose when having the same number on both lines was if you were on the phone on the first line and then someone else called it then rang the second line so you had to answer that one too and then have to wait for the call to finish to go onto the internet. Granted if you were already on the internet and the first line was busy, then the caller would get the busy tone.

Was too much of an issue for us either way as the master sockets were on top of each other as the PC for the internet was in the main room.

As above, cancel the 2nd line and then just wire that in into the first line as an extension.

re-wiring it onto the first is all very well. however, technically that cabling is ours and you would be breaking the t & c's. it also depends on where the line is wired from. if it's direct from the pole then your screwed. why not get the sky engineer to install one when they fit the multiroom?

just use a long telephone extension for the multiroom.
Needs reconnecting once per month to maintain the Sky service.

Personally I would also cease one phone line. If you want more numbers just buy an VOIP ATA adapter for the old phone.(£25 or so) .
Then get a free phone number from someone like sipgate

Here's a man talking sense (VoIP), and as for the Sky, well just chuck an extension cable to the new location so the Sky man can do the do, then when he's gone unplug it. I did that in 2002 and i've never had any of my Sky boxes plugged in since they were first installed - i've had no problems.
