OUTRAGE! Neighbours criticized for incest - spoiler
Calculon

Quote:
“NEW TV soap storyline involving incest between an aunt and a nephew has been branded "sick" and "opportunistic" by a leading family group.

The latest Neighbours plot features Miranda's Parker's sister, Nicola West (Imogen Bailey) and nephew Riley Parker (Sweeney Young) in a secret intimate relationship.
It comes after the world was sickened by news that Austrian father Josef Fritzl had imprisoned and raped his daughter for nearly a quarter of a century.

A South Australian father and daughter also recently caused outrage when they revealed they had a child together.

The Australian Family Association has accused producers of using the recent news events to try to attract viewers.

Queensland president Mark Holzworth said: "Is Neighbours redefining itself as as some kind of sick mockumentary?

"Incest is a very sensitive subject that I wouldn't expect a prime-time program aimed at children to be tackling. They are dealing with young minds who can't fully understand or analyse the issues."

It's not the first time Neighbours has featured incest. Two storylines in the late 1990s also caused a stir and were censored by the BBC.

The first had Lucy Robinson in a relationship with her half-brother Glen – whom her dad had fathered during the Vietnam War – despite both knowing that they were related. The second involved Serena Bishop (Lara Sacher) and Luka Dokich (Keelan O'Hehir), who embarked on an intimate relationship, blissfully ignorant of the fact that they were half-siblings, sharing a mother, Liljana Bishop (Marcella Russo).

Neighbours new Executive Producer, Susan Bowen, defended the storyline. "It is controversial, but all our stories are handled carefully," she said.

But Ms Bowen said Neighbours would "grow in leaps and bounds this year" and that the three new additions were doing "extremely well". regarding 3 new cast members”

Neighbours storylines are planned 7 months in advanced! How can Neighbours be branded as 'sick' and "opportunistic"? This wasn't news in January.

Its proof that the media are hungry for stories in order to sell papers.

I'm not a fan of Neighbors, but I think people screaming they're sick and opportunistic for featuring incest is a bit stupid.
Its hardly aimed at children really, and I doubt they're showing them 'at it'. The Australian father and daughter shows it really happens too, its not like they're pulling it out of thin air.
Chances are it'll end with a bang like Hollyoaks' incest storyline did and the pair wont live happily ever after.

I thought Serena was in it in the 2000s?

She was, 2003-2005.

Bad reporting there.

Don't see what's wrong with an incest storyline, soaps should tackle hard hitting situations like this.

Riley is adopted. They aren't blood relations.

The new Neighbours vixen is Nicola West, Miranda Parker's sister!

They are so dumb! LOL

Not even blood related...

And they got dates mixed up.

I think it's a good storline, it's Riley's exit storyline.

They may not actually be related

And the article is just plain nonsense

But lets hope the General australian viewers will now backlash against the awful Parkers and force them off the show in shame! This could be the chance the show needs to properly Revamp without the dullards which have been dragging the show down

LMAO Neighbours lame attempt at creating publicity. You didnt see H&A making a big deal of Alf Stewart sleeping with his niece.

I find it hard to fathom how they feel ok running a storyline like this and yet only elude to the fact that Angus and Rachel slept together, they use terms like "got close" and "were intimate". If they can't say they had sex then how can they show something far more contraversial?

Does this mean that another Parker is joining the show?

Hmmm, don't these people know that this storyline was devised last year and filmed three months ago? It's hardly a ratings device, but just unfortunate timing.

Anyway, I've seen Nicola in action and she's great. Ramsay Street was missing a bitch and I think she could be great.

IT'S NOT BL**DY INCEST.

I do wish this 'Family' group would just sod off with their bibles and be pious somewhere else. They've picked on Neighbours so many times, when in reality it's most likely the 'safest' show on telly.

But saying that, kissing in public is an indecent act to these idiots.

Was just about to make that point myself - I'd have thought Alf's biggest horror would have been that realisation, forget the fact Colleen's his big sister, he was getting jiggy with his niece years ago!

How on earth is the slightly nutty family group causing a stink anything to do with Neighbours 'creating publicity', when the normal media have hardly squeaked about the whole thing?

Aren't Riley and Bridget adopted anyway.

Im not sure if someone has already mentioned this, but technicially it wouldn't be incest as Riley isn't Miranda and Steve's biological child, nor is Bridget, though they are biologically siblings.

This, in turn, means, that Miranda's sister wouldn't actually be committing a crime. Right?
I mean its nothing like Rhys Ashworth getting it on with his half-sister Beth Clements in Hollyoaks.

Nicola is Miranda's sister. Riley and Bridget are adopted by Steve and Miranda anyway so no actual real relation.

The storyline didn't really come to much anyway as it turns out Riley and Nicola had a thing years ago and they had a bit of an attraction when she first arrived in Neighbours but then Riley left.
