had an lg 42pc1d plasma for 18 months which has now developed the "lg sparklies" and is out of warranty.

after a bit of argy bargy with the shop and a few letters back and forth, they have just offered to replace it with a Panasonic th42px80.

happy days

That doesn't prove a warranty is pointless just that you managed to get a TV 6 months out of its basic warranty replaced - well done.

Try that when it's 4 years old. That's not to say it's worth paying a lot for an extended warranty (I don't take them out myself) it's just that saying they are pointless is going to far.

Who was the retailer? They deserve to be commended for their actions. I do feel a bit sorry for them though as it is aways a nightmare to get products back to the manufacturers at this age.
I know that people are going to start quoting soga and buyers rights at me but I feel that the manufacturers need to accept more responsibility for their products than they do now. I would suggest a sliding scale of responsibility for the manufacturers ranging from full cover of all costs, to supplying parts free of charge, to a % of the repair bill over say a 3-4 year period. This would both help the decent brands retail their value whilst also reducing the number of awful, crap no-name brands that provide no quality or backup service. This would also cut the amount of electrical goods that are dumped when still relativley new.

Surely after 12months it should be the manufacturers problem to take it up with, not the shop.

Is it a new Panny they are replacing with or a Second hand one ?

No, all your legal rights are against the retailer, it's then up to the retailer to try and sort something out with the manufacturer - however, the retailer has basically no legal rights in the matter.
