Cheap MP3 player for holiday
Realale

Can anyone recommend me a cheap MP3 player for my lovely wife to take on her holidays. Only looking to spend £20 - £30 as she will only use it whilst sunbathing by the pool and then it will be put away till next years jollies. We have been looking at the Creative Stone but read good and bad reviews.
Thanks for any help.

My flatmate has the Zen stone, and he likes it. Small, simple to put music on and the battery life is good.

The reviews look very good apart from a very small minority who have the player fail within a few months. It has a 12 month guarantee so easy enough to get it replaced I would have thought.

It recharges via USB though so if you don't have a computer handy you will need to buy a USB mains recharger.

Thanks for that - looks like it could well be the one then but I am a bit worried about the usb charging. Would anyone know if I would be able to use my Nokia phone which has a usb cable to charge the stone up?

My daughter has a motorola something or other phone (razr?) the phone charger works to charge the zen stone from the mains. Also from our solar powered charging device thing.

Sorry, I'm useless.

Possibly but you'd probably flatten the phone battery in the process. (Or if you mean using the phone charger it may well be the wrong voltage for the Zen)

The proper mains charger is only £4 anyway:

I bought a 2Gb Matsui MAT120MR from Currys for £23. It had a horrible user interface but a firmware upgrade has turned it into a good cheap and cheerful device. A Currys person told me that they're now all sold with the upgrade. Battery life is 8 hours from one AAA battery.

Yeah I'd go for a cheap and cheerful device that uses AA/AAA batteries for when you're on holiday. Just check your local Argos and choose one that suits your price range and capacity there. I wouldn't bother with USB as it's fiddly unless it has its own USB cord and charger (like the iPod).

eBay mate, No end of cheap Chinese stuff that does the job perfectly well for example:

I'd get the first one, luxury of a colour screen and extra features.

Thanks for your help and opinions everyone, went for a refurbished Creative Stone Plus from their website for £20 (+£5 delivery). I am sure we can chat the rep up on holiday to charge it up for us from their computers.
Thanks again

The Zen Stone Plus is great as it has an FM radio too, which will go for a long number of hours listening compared to mp3 file playback.

If it's a USB charger it's a USB charger. No voltage issues are possible. I've use a Motorola phone charger for my USB charging MP3 unit plenty of times.
