THE first black Doctor Who could be on our screens if one ambitious actor gets his way.

Adrian Lester is a huge fan and has set his sights on becoming the next Doctor.

The 39-year-old Hustle star said: “I love Doctor Who. I grew up with the series. I actually own the very first copy of the Doctor Who Magazine with Tom Baker and the Daleks on the cover. The role really appeals to me.

“TV producers don’t like taking risks with casting, but that can make things a bit boring.

“It would be good to mix things up and there’s no reason why they couldn’t have a black Doctor, or a woman. In fact, why not a black woman? Though I want to play him first.”

The role of the Doctor is open as the current run is the last full series with David Tennant.

THE first Doctor Who from Essex could be on our screens if one ambitious actor gets his way.

Smerph is a relatively large fan and has set his sights on becoming the next Doctor.

The 24-year-old said: “I like Doctor Who. I didn't grow up with the series, but I watch it every week. The role really appeals to me.

Not being a racist here, but as I have said before, The Doctor is a white british male and always will be.

There will never be a female James bond etc...

Classic means STAYING classic

You surely mean the Doctor has been PLAYED by white british males, as he is clearly anything but!

And to look at Bond, the English icon - played by an Aussie, a Scotsman, a Welshman and an Irish man with a mid-atlantic drawl. But yes, never a woman.

I think Lester would be a great choice for the role.

He's a good actor & he's a fan, so he'll know how to pitch it.

Saying that, I can't imagine anyone other than Tennant doing it: he's made the role his own.

I'm not sure I agree, EleventhDoctor. The Doctor will always be a British (accented) male, but the colour of his skin has never seemed "set in stone" in that way, to me. No idea who this Adrian Lester guys is (other than wanting to land a prime role one TV - doesn't every actor. Some news story that ), but I remember Colin Salmon's name cropping up form the rumour mill when the 9th and 10th were in casting. I'd have been more than happy with that.

Thats what they say about every good doctor...

I'd be happy for a black Doctor. I can't see why not.

A female doctor? No way.

I really dont like the idea...

nowdays, the casting of black actors in a previously white role is done for impact...or at least seen that way.

I think he would be great as the Doctor but it would all be over shadowed.

I want to see headlines about the new doctor... not the "FIRST BLACK DOCTOR!"

He is a fantastic actor but unfortunately would lose his talent in the media rush... especially in the tabloids.

Although, otherwise, I agree - a great choice for number 11.

`11thDoc

(OR ME!!! JUST REALISED WHAT MY NAME IS!)

Piffle.

What about Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter in Casino Royale? Or Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin in Daredevil. Or Halle Berry as frigging Catwoman*? If those buttons aren't pushed, nobody seems to care but a bigoted fanboy minority, or a hack on a slow news day.

(*Yes it was godawful, but that's beside the point )

Becoming black works for the Doctor more than any character. He's a guy which changes his looks and character!

As I see it, colour just changes the way you look, sex changes what you are. Which is why a black Doctor, yes, a woman Doctor, No.

I agree too. I wouldn't bat an eye if the Doctor was black. I would have a tough time adjusting to a change in gender though.

I should explain that changes to classic text annoys me...

the kingpin is white.
catwoman is white.
nick fury is white and the Doctor is too...

The characters are white.... although I can see how The Doctor can bend this rule...

The others though... uh uh!

Well with the latest Doctor's daughter twist; could that be paving the way for an eventual female Doctor?
