Does anyone know what this is? I've noticed I'm being charged £11.91+VAT a quarter - and have been for sometime - but have no idea what it's for? BT website comes up blank. And yes I know I should check my bills more often

Thanks, but it doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not on any benefits. And there's no savings be made, just an additional cost. Looks like I need to ring them.

You must be the only person in the country then (apart from me).

Additional cost?

BT Basic is £13.50 per quarter 9and can pay any method you like) instead of £31.50 per quarter if paying by DD and online billing, more if you don't pay by DD and don't opt for online billing.

Yes in addition to £36.89 per quarter for my Unlimited Evening & Weekend plan.

It says it's a Calling feature not a Calling plan.

Contacted BT. They told me it was for Caller Display which is free now so it won't be on any further bills. They wouldn't credit me what I've already paid because I didn't tell them I didn't want to pay for it. But how could I as I didn't know what it was. And who in their right mind would want to pay for something's that free. It beggars belief! The complaints on it's way.

Value plans have not been offered for years. They used to charge a high amount up front and then give you around £5 back.

BT cannot take you off a Value Plan and change you to free caller display (It hasnt always been free) without your permission.

Should have checked your bills before now.

That's exactly what they said. So it's bye bye BT, hello Virgin Media. I know it's out of the fire into the frying pan but it's the principal!

Nothing like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

You're going to wish you hadn't moved line rental away from BT.

At least with BT you can use all other call providers, such as Primus Saver 2 for no monthly fee and inclusive evening and weekend calls (each call up to 90 mins) with no monthly fee penny mobile for calls to all UK mobiles at 20p for up to 20 mins. Use short-code access to 1899 and 18185 for other calls such as UK calls for just 5p per call no matter how long you are on for and international calls from 0.5p. Plus from BT free caller display via BT privacy.

OK if you don't use your phone to make calls and aren't bothered with caller display, then there's nothing in it, but if you do make calls, then it's the wrong choice moving to cable for the phone from BT unless like me you got cable to give you free line rental, free calls package and free caller display.

After threatening to take away my custom BT offered me a refund of two year's charges, which I've accepted.

Why does everyone bang on about keeping the line rental with BT? Most other providers will allow access via a freephone number anyway, and yes, it's slightly more expensive to do it that way but we're talking pennies. Why stick with BT and pay more line rental?

Hmmm.

Pennies.

5p connection and ZERO pence per minute compared to 4p connection and 1p per minute is more than pennies at the end of the month.

Calls international some double the price.

Calls to mobiles 6p/min weekdays compared to 10p/min

Why switch line rental providers to save pennies, when with many if you want caller display you have to pay, so you then not only have higher line rental, you are then stuck with higher call charges.

Still cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Sadly a fair few people can't see the error of their ways and blindly spend more thinking they spend less.

But hey, some people are crazy like that. You can't help all people.

The reason why everyone bangs on about it is because it is common sense and the wise thing to do.

I didn't mean that using BT as opposed to, say, 18185, made a difference of pennies, i meant that using say 18185's 0800 access number instead of the 18185 access code made the call charges pennies higher overall, and you can dial the 0800 number from any provider. AND, there's usually a 'normal' number (020) that you can dial for access, so it's good for free eve and weekend mobile calls too.
Tell me again why it's better to pay BT for your line, as opposed to your phone company? It's the same line connected, in most cases, to the same gear but it's cheaper. You can still access your preferred company via a freephone number if needed, instead of dialling a short access code.

I suppose my fingernail might wear down slightly faster but that's all i can think of.

And higher line rental? £10/month with Sky gets line rental, caller dispaly, 1571, free eve and weekend calls and broadband (2GB limit though - if i wanted it)
I use 18185 to call mobiles (via either the 0800 number in the day, or the 020 number in the eves)
How is that more expensive than BT then?
