Well it's about time they actually did show tunes instead of the making an X factor pop show.
But I bet out of the 1000s of excellent, timeless, show-stopping classics, they all do the most obscure songs from B grade modern shows that closed after about 6 months. A real opportunity missed again. |

i would like to see some one sing "there's a fine, fine line" from avenue q - it's quite a subtle song, but there's storytelling in it, and i think it would be a nice one to sing.

I don't know this song at all. I'd have thought that it might not be well enough known to the general public for it to make a very strong positive impact.

Oh dear god, thats a huge song to give her - after she ruined 'Somewhere' i'm a bit nervous about this one!
![]() Yay for musical theatre songs though - they always seem to really sort out those with talent from those who can't really hack it. |

I really hope this is true, and I hope they stick to it and don't do wishy washy pop songs that we're in a musical that lasted six weeks.
I'd love to see: Jodie: Another suitcase in another hall (Evita) Jessie: Just You Wait (MFL) or Worst Pies in London (ST) Sam: I don't know how to love him (JCS) (Don't know why but I can't see Sam pulling off a relationship with someone like Bill Sykes) Niamh: I Feel Pretty (West Side Story) or Just You Wait (MFL) I'd like to see Niamh do something with a bit of fight in it Rachel: Day by Day (Godspell) or Look at me I'm Sandra Dee (Grease). I'm not convinced she can do funny |

Please, please, please don't give Sam that song (the one mentioned at the beginning of the thread). I'm all for them singing musical songs (yay!) but not that one! Argh, it's gonna be awful. But... maybe she'll prove me wrong and it will be wonderful. Hmm..

Fantastic news that they will be singing musical theatre and not the rubbish they have been given previously.
However, not sure Sam will pull off DG at all, if she does she'll have booked her ticket into the final, but if she fails....... |

...would not be expected to sing more than 2 octaves with accuracy and even tone.
A classical soloist (female) might achieve 2 and a half to three but sacrificing some quality at either top or bottom end dependent upon her range. The Queen of the Night aria from Magic Flute doesn't ask for more than that and it's considered to be very taxing. What these pop singers manage (or claim to manage) sounds ludicrous to me. They must be making noises or squeaks rather than singing. The notes at the outer limits of their range have to be produced in unorthodox ways and not technically "sung". They are basically sound effects - if true. I am classically trained and can go from bottom Bb up to a top F# (Queen of Night) comfortably (well I can when I practise!) and can push it a bit lower if I have to - works on some songs, not on others. That's a big range but only around 2 and a half octaves! There's nothing that makes you better the bigger your range is. I would expect 2 octaves from a good, trained singer though. |

I don't know DG.
So I checked it out on youtube.
Didn't like it. Hope Sam sings "gravity" and not "gravidee" which annoyed the hell out of me. I know that performer is American but it still bugs me to hear "gravidee". ![]() I like trad musicals and I don't know if it will appeal to the majority very much. Thus depriving Sam of votes. Hope the other songs are more familiar. |

is sam really singing Defying Gravity this week? or is it just speculation! i hope she is singing it i absolutely love the song. also i don't think she will be deprived of votes just because the majority won't know the song, i mean if you like someone and they perform well you are going to vote for them no matter how well you know or don't know the song they sing.

Song choice is important.
Look at Sarah. She got Bojangles and she was gone.
Wrong song can land you in the mire. |

i don't think bojangles was a wrong song choice i just don't think she performed to the best of her potential, or maybe there were other people who performed better. theres many reasons someone could not get the votes.

I don't see how anybody can have a 5 octave range like Mariah Carey claims. Yes she has a strong range on her but 5 octaves has to be physically impossible, unless of course you are including squeaking and grunting! To put it into perspective, a full size piano keyboard only has 7 octaves!

Thank you, fairypenny.
I listened to Kerry Ellis and I prefer her. The sound quality wasn't good on any of the clips I accessed though.
And I still don't like it. It invites a bit of a belting and I'd rather hear Sam sing more lyrically. She hasn't shown much diversity - hasn't had the chance. Especially with JB teaching her to shout her way through a song. Could be a disaster. I expect the panel to praise her to the skies though - whatever she does. |
