no worries - kerry ellis is an amazing singer, she makes it sound so effortless, and i'm quite upset that i haven't seen her do it live (i saw cassidy jansen, who is her standby and is also amazing).
the problem with songs from wicked, is that i believe they were originally written to suit idina menzel's voice, although i don't know if that's the case with defying gravity. it does require a bit of belting, and tbh, all the women that have played elphaba have voices that are far superior to samantha's.

I think it will be a disaster. It is IMO a horrible shouty tuneless song. Not something that will win over the public IMO.

Although ALW raves over Sam I hardly think she's been given an easy ride song wise. She's had all the hardest songs. Unlike Niamh who almost always gets a fairly easy ballad well within her comfort zone

^^ The panel love Samantha, I really don't see them panning her. They'll probably say - that's the best version we've ever heard. And that's when I'll throw my remote at the TV and send ALW the bill for the repairs.

Agree with you that CJ is AMAZING!

But the songs weren't written for Idina as work was already well underway by the time she was cast. Stephanie J Block did the workshops originally. Though certain things may well have been done for Idina. Glinda was definately done with Kristen Chenowith in mind.

I think Nobody Mourns The Wicked was written for Idina IIRC. Also i'm with the CJ love, saw her covering for Katie Rowley Jones as Nessarose and she was fantastic.

...having heard DG I think that if that song is the highlight then I won't be hurrying to see it.

I am not alone in finding it tuneless.
Not keen at all.

wasn't no good deed also done for idina? i don't know where i've read that...

anyway, back on topic.

it's unfair if only sam has a song from MT - and tbh i don't think that all the girls left have got the voices for MT. if they'd done these at the start, we'd have a very different final 5 - maybe ashley, fran and sarah would still be in.

I suppose it is unfair... but is it unfair that Jodie had "Luck be a Lady"a few weeks ago, Jessie had "The man that got away"and Ashley had "Hey Big Spender" which were all also from musicals when the rest of the girls didn't?

^^ yeah, it is. i think that this kind of show should have similarly themed songs each week, but i think that the earlier shows should involve MT more heavily. that way, we'd really see which of the girls had the voices to suit MT. then they could move onto the more poppy elements, but with an MT twist, like they've done for stuff like abba songs, putting them into musicals.

however, the general public aren't that au fait with songs from MT, so they might start to switch off if that happened.

That week was "Big Band week" rather than musicals. Still, I do agree with you on the unfairness. My main gripe really is the judges comments - it's so arbitrary and all over the place.

agree with you fully on the judges comments... they should follow our uni regulations for commenting on creative pieces : first you say what's good, then you say what's bad and you end by saying what you could do to improve

none of this "you're world class" one week and "you're an understudy" the next In fairness to Rachel, I thought she was better on "You've got a friend" than on "For once in my life", so the comments made no sense to me

I will admit to being a bit puzzled as Elphaba doesn't sing No One Mourns the Wicked!

True. But as Sam already got Somewhere, it does seem unfair if she got another MT song while some of the other girls haven't had any. Although I guess it could work against Sam, if she doesn't manage to pull the song off.

Sorry if I misunderstand you, but ALW didn't write the songs in Les Mis they were written by Claud Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil
