Can DVD players upscale to HD on TV channels?
I’m thinking to buy a new dvd player with HD upscale functionality. Is it possible for the dvd player to connect to the TV in the way that all TV channels I watch will be upscaled to HD?
By the way I understand the upscaling is never the same quality as the real HD broadcast, but seems like a cheaper option than Sky HD sub... |

A player (as opposed to a recorder) won't have a tuner, so no.
Even if you use a DVD recorder, you'd only see an improvement if both the tuner AND the upscaler are better than the ones in your TV. |

Sorry I actually meant DVD recorder... I'm interested in the Sony model which upscales to 1080p, where my TV can do up to 1080i. Is it worth the buy?

As +3db said ....
If your TV has a decent upscaler, you're not likely to notice a great deal of difference. If you route an SD source through an upscaling device into a TV which also has an upscaler, it's just going to do what the TV was already doing anyway. |

I have a Sony LCD tv with built in Freeview and connected via HDMI is a Panasonic combi dvd recorder with Freeview built in. I can switch between the sonys own freeview signal and that of the panasonic - the picture via the panasonics hdmi upscaler are very slightly better - but only by a fraction. Unless you switched between them you wouldnt know which was which.
