But ok, I'll give you that HBO and other such channels are not like BBC----but I was asking why IDA starts at such odd times. The reply was that the BBC doesn't have ads to pad out to an hour or half hour show. My reply was that US also has channels without commercials but they still start on the hour/half hour.

All well, I'm just gonna go with the "The Brits and their eccentricity' hypothesis because it really makes my life easier. ”

Heh - it's not even something I'd ever considered odd to be honest. I suppose that it's just because our programmes aren't always one hour or half hour blocks, and so it's just fitting them in where they'll go, if you know what I mean. Even on the channels that do have advertising, having a programme start at twenty-five to the hour isn't unheard of.

the no commercials part is the answer though for the show times starting when they do on the BBC. the sky (satellite) programming does start on the hour or half hour precisely. i get your point though about the non commercial channels in the US and maybe they are just longer shows? who knows but if eccenticity works for ya, that's fine you are and i find it a complimentary word anyway.

i guess when you get used to it; it is like second nature. i found it odd at first due to programming on other channels and then when learning about this tv license fee and that you don't get it free until you are 75! LOL..taxes are everywhere I know, the tv one in other places is probably just hidden.

Lol, we've got our own "nutter" ways in America I'm sure. Each country has it's own nuances and lifestyles that must leave everyone else perplexed.

I always wonder how the British perceive Americans. After reading an article about stereotypical loud annoying tourists, I tried to be polite as possible while visiting London. Then my Blackpool friend teased me humorously for apologizing so much!!

Well, I am Canadian/English . When I was little we sang God Save the Queen and had a portrait of the Queen in our classroom so I felt akin to it even before moving there. I know what I think of Americans kidding, I have a lot of family who live there now and I think any culture that differs do think differently and hold on to stereotypes if I am honest. The Simpsons portrays Candians as being stupid which we are not. Most british friends love Canada. I also know Brits who perceive Americans as loving Britain and the Royal Family, I don't see it that way by in large. I do know when I first moved to England and i was in a sporting goods store, until the fellow knew I was Canadian by origin and not American he didn't help me. seriously, he said "oh sorry, you are not American then" I could have complained but I didn't. sorry to say that because I am sure you are lovely and it isn't fair to those who are kind Americans. I get diversity but still have my thoughts on a lot of places including my own country.

Would you mind giving a link, please Willow? I can't find it on the site. I'm probably just being totally thick though, and it's somewhere really obvious!

I had to google it... lol!

Week 6: http://www.playbill.com/news/article/117930.html
-Actually LOL to his comment about "no this way, Louise!"

Sarah was chosen and she sounded great, but for some reason they kept the lyrics at the end the same where Mama Rose gently chides daughter Louise for dancing the wrong way. So there was an inexplicable close-up of Sarah singing "No, this way, Louise!" to no one in particular. She sort of gave it the energy of Hey! It's just a colloquial expression we all say…like, "No Way, Jose."

Week 7 - ...I can't find it. Haha!

Haha his reviews are so funny! I laughed out loud at this bit, about Sam's 'Survivor':
"Then she hauled out, "I'm not gonna diss you on the Internet," which make no sense because during Oliver! Nancy disses Bill Sykes constantly on her blog."

"It's always charming when a septuagenarian comes on to a teenager."

Loved this comment about BH and Sam (sarah eviction week)

im not entirely sure if i like this guy or not, why can't he accept the fact that britain has different slang words and colloquialisms? and its not that hard to be able to tell the difference between an irish accent and a cockney accent, i think most of us could probably distinguish between someone from texas and someone from new york (and theyre in the same country).
but some of its quite funny, especially that comment about nancy dissing bill sykes on her blog.
and at least he's got good taste when it comes to his favourite
i was looking forward to his take on the team youth vs team experience performances and he didnt even comment.

re the accents: you'd be surprised!

I'm from Bucks and have a fairly neutral accent. When I was with friends in the US a few years ago we started talking about accents and I did a Liverpudlian one. Now bear in mind that I CAN do this accent (did an extract from Shirley Valentine for my gold medal LAMDA acting exam and was complimented on it).

They couldn't tell the difference beween that and my real one!

Makes you wonder why Jane Leeves changed her natural Surrey accent to play Daphne in Frasier with a Mancunian accent...
