The BBC will reportedly axe its series of musical reality shows after I'd Do Anything finishes.

With viewing figures down from the previous two series, which found stars for The Sound of Music and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, BBC bosses are allegedly looking to find another Saturday night show to stop Graham Norton leaving for ITV.

An insider told The Sun: "The BBC are panicking. They want a hit new idea. They've put the word out to producers in the know about big Saturday shows."

However, a BBC spokesman denied the rumours, saying: "Of course we're looking for new shows for Graham but there's no truth in the idea we're not doing another musical reality show."

In I'd Do Anything, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber auditions contestants for the roles of Nancy and Oliver Twist in the upcoming West End stage revival of Oliver!

The show has come under fire from actor and Old Vic theatre director Kevin Spacey for providing the musical with free advertising.

Time to move on to something different.

Too many reality shows become stale & too many times they are too predictable who will win anyway.

I don't think this one has been predictable at all. I think the problem with this one has been some of the unequal and ridiculous and unfair judging comments.

Maybe its been the shows down fall......the ineffective judging.....

Repost of what I said in Caspers thread basically, with regard to Kevin Spacey

Long gone are the days that theatre folk supported eachother and their theatre shows.

I would have thought that Kevin Spacey's name being attached to the Old Vic it would have brought some new revenue, and I think he is behaving like a spoiled child.

Times have changed I know. It is now a very expensive night out to go to a theatre, but I believe that true theatre people who can afford it, would go to a revival of a musical whether or not it has been shown on a BBC talent search for the said musical.

I wonder how much of the audience that watches, will or can actually go anyway.

I guess their thought of showing it over two nights is not getting enough of a ratings boost to keep it on. that was the first clue that perhaps it was dwindling. sad really, because there is an audience for these shows, but i guess not enough.

I think this is the least predictable of the Musical reality shows so far. I think the main problem of IDA is that, as they so frequently mention on the show, everyone has a different view of Nancy and therefore there is no clear favourite in the public. Lee and Connie were stand out winners from day 1, there's no one candidate who the public think, even if they're not their favourite, will be excellent at portraying the role. Example- I loved Abi in Maria, but when she was knocked out I had 100% faith in Connie. If you see Jodie as Nancy, you will not see Naimh as Nancy and vice versa.

Also, people are maybe getting fed up of the ridiculous comments from the judges. And the Saturday/Sunday split does them no favours with viewing figures.

*shrug*

I hope they do another one next year. The shows are doing a lot for the popularity of musical theatre.

I don't/won't believe it. At least not until there's a search for Jesus Christ Superstar!

Yes, if they had one for a pure lead, like Evita (well Germany did it and don't know they need one) or a Mary Poppins or something it would work again.

I loved the Idea of Mrs Hannigan in Annie but then we would be stuck in the Oliver/Nancy game again.

Very true.

Plus why the up to today pop songs and not more theatrical venue, as this is what they would be singing in the production.

Stating to so many, you are my Nancy , or this is the best song so far etc doesn't do much for ego but hinders & divides the girls.

I felt that Jessie or Rachel were or are the favorites from the very begining.

IDA just isn't doing it for me the way Joseph did, if you know what I mean. I didn't watch Maria (can't remember why).

this is one of the few UK originals that does not work in the US. I can't figure out why, but I love the whole concept of the show forgetting the conspiracies, false crap, i do like it.

Hahaha. Yes indeed! I'm wondering what kind of Jesus ALW would be looking for?

We don't want another nice loving Jesus, we want a modern rock n' roll, would rip off his own grandmother type Jesus. Someone like Alice Cooper.

Perhaps our prayers will be answered.

I think the problem this year is the quality of the finalists, they are not up to par IMO, please don't slate me for saying that, but each week, there are several poor performances and it makes the show less watchable.

I am going to see Ken Neeley reprise his role!

Again with this, he had a blondie in the lead and Jesus would have looked Middle Eastern in reality I think, so maybe he would look for that...I always wondered why Jesus was portrayed like that, unless it had some biblical image meaning but I won't get religious here.

I think thats why we are not seeing alot of improvment over the last 7 weeks, the panel are sending them around and around like a hampster wheel.........and some are not confident enough just to get on with it,,,,,

I hope not. I've loved HDYSAPLM?, ADWD and IDA. Alot of the finalists are very talented (unlike shows like X Factor where there are about 3 talented acts in the final 12), and it helps boost these peoples careers in theatre. It's a great format, very camp, and I love Graham Norton and ALW.
