i haven't read it but perhaps it will assist you.

it's a mac thing. don't know what the pc equivalent is.

did you try restoring the ipod first via itunes?

I have no idea what that does, if i do that and i can't sync it i won't be able to get it back on...will i still have my library fully stocked?

restoring it will wipe the ipod. so, if it won't sync after that, you'll be stuck.

hmm, well thanks for the advice, is there anyone who has been in a similar situation and what have they done?

I'm in a similar situation, except I'm getting error -53. From what I gather, it's an iPod internal hard drive error, for which the only solution is to replace the hard drive (or the entire iPod). It's unbelievably frustrating, especially as I'm just out of warranty, and the last thing I want to do is line Apple's pockets with more money as I'm currently stuck with a very expensive, 2 year old paperweight.

I've already had a replacement iPod during warranty period; different issue that time though. I think the moral to this story is: don't buy iPods! I'll certainly be investing in an Archos when I've gathered the pennies.

Sorry I can't help you more.

It isn't so unusual for a hard drive in any such device to give out at two years, especially if it has taken more than its share of drops and bumps. That's not an Ipod issue but simply a hard drive design issue affecting all hard drives.

My Classic threw a wobbler a few months ago - all the data "disappeared" - the iPod appeared to have no data loaded onto it, but the hard drive space was still being used. The repair function in iTunes just threw up an error when I tried to run it. Out of desperation I quit iTunes, went into "My Computer" and did a format on the device from there. After that had completed I unplugged the iPod's USB lead and then reconnected. iTunes fired up straight away and re-synched perfectly . . .
