Hi,

We bought our Sony Bravia in March this year everything has been fine with it until Saturday when I went to switch it on and it wouldn't switch on, the light on the bottom right was red and neither the remote or the buttons on the top would get it on.

We reported it to Sony and an engineer came out yesterday and took it away and mentioned something about it being a power supply fault.

1) Surely a 2 month old TV shouldn't have a power supply fault, is anyone else aware of this?

2) Does anyone know if our warranty starts again from the date it was repaired?

I am not impressed by Sony's Customer Services either, the woman at the end of the line was less than helpful, ho hum!

Thanks

IMO No you shouldn't have bought a Samsung, they look cheap with their shiny plastic cabinets and the sound is crap. I've had a Bravia for 6 months and its been spot on, though Im a little biased as I've had Sony products for over 10 years with no issue.

I'm doubtful it's the power supply, more likely something else - I don't think I've had a duff power supply in a Sony LCD?.

No, it continues from when you first bought the set.

Why did you ring the Sony Helpline (not even run by Sony) rather than contact the dealer you bought it from?.

Hi, That's what the engineer seemed to think, I don't know what to think as I am not technically minded one bit!! All I know is that whatever it is I would like it repaired!! Do you have any idea of what it could be?

No, it continues from when you first bought the set.

I thought this was the case but wasn't sure.

We bought it from a catalogue, we phoned the catalogue and they gave me the number for the Sony technical line, I didn't know it wasn't run by Sony and quite honestly now you tell me that I am not surprised!! They couldn't give 2 hoots!

Thanks for your replies

If you are not happy to have a repair on this set, you are within your rights to request a replacement IMHO. The catalogue will more than likely refuse at first, and you will need to be persistant.

I'm not saying that you should ask for a replacement - it's entirely up to you. If it's a simple repair and can be done quickly, then perhaps thats ok.

Hi,

I have just spoken to Sony Service Centre and they are waiting for a new Mainboard for the TV, this sounds quite a big problem, is anyone else aware of any issues with the mainboards on Sony's and what it entails?

Thanks

Considering they are supposed to repair to component level, then it sounds a bit strange?.

What model is your TV?, it's possible the software is corrupt, and they don't have the required equipment to reprogram it, and have had to order a ready programmed board?.

But replacing the board is a simple job, and it should only take two days to arrive from Belgium.

Let's not forget the whole point of a guarantee is that should it fail it will be repaired or replaced if a satisfactory/swift repair is not possible.

If they gave you a new model ever time a failure occured they'd end up selling hundreds/thousands as grade A / refurbished.... this would mean higher costs to the manufacturer and ultimately higher costs to the purchaser of the original item.

Well after 8 days of the Sony Service Centre having our TV in for "repair" (and us having to lend a decent sized one off my family due to our 15" bedroom TV being too small!) I called them today, apparently they sent off for the Mainboard last week from Sony but have not received it.

My friend has a Samsung LCD which has had a similar prob (her's has taken about 5 tries each time to get on) and their technician came out and said it needed "some sort of board" (her words not mine!) but the manufacturer never sends them out so she would probably get an new TV (hers is older than ours).

Now my question is - have I waited long enough to be able to call Sony and say that it hasn't been repaired in sufficient time? I am really Pee'd off with them and (this includes the SSC) their lack of contact regarding our TV, it's not as if we paid buttons for it! What would you do?

Thanks for reading

Sounds unlikely, unless the part is out of stock spares invariably arrive in two days - all Sony spares for Europe come from Belgium, they are flown over and delivered by DHL.

It's no good ringing 'Sony', your legal rights aren't against Sony, they are against the dealer who sold you the TV, Sony are under no obligation to repair the set within a specific timeframe (unlike the dealer).

Hi,

Just to let you know that we (finally) got our TV back from the SSC today, it says on the report "Traced Fault to PCB Main, replaced and tested ok" when the guys brought it back I asked if it was a common fault with a TV this new and they said no. The catalogue have offered for us to send the TV back and either order a new Sony or another make.

What would you do if you were in my situation? Keep the repaired TV or send off for another?

Thanks

Whilst the chances are the "Repaired" set will now be fine especially as they have changed the mainboard if you can put up with the inconvenience of sending it back & getting a replacement I think it might be the best way to go as your new set will have a 12 month warranty. To be honest a fault can occur on any set so don't let it put you off Sony.
