We have had 2 cold calls today where you answer and its a voicemessage asking you to press 5 if you want to discuss consoldating loans! I pressed 9 first time to be removed from dialing list and 2nd time pressed 5 and gave the woman on the phone an earful who was then rude and accused me of calling her when I challenged where she got my number. I expect its a random number generator but 2 calls from seperate companys is weird as im x-directory etc. Anyone else had this?

Why not just put the phone down?

Its not the point as i have gone to great lengths not to get cold callers and until recently it has worked very well. Damn cheek these people intrude on your home like this!

Treat these kind of calls as you would Spam in your e-mail .... ignore and delete !! We had one and the number turned out to be in Michigan USA - so pressing '5' to dial could have been a costly mistake ??

BTW - we are ex-directory too, but these calls are from random number generators so that's no protection from getting them.

No, unless you pick up and dial-out using a dial tone, you won't be charged.

They were the ones that called you, so as long as that call still continues, it'll be free. If you press a number and you hear the "ring ring", don't worry. The call won't be charged to you, as they were the ones that made it.

I have two phone lines. Annoyingly despite registering with TPS,I stil get nuisance calls asking if I need debt advice,loans or that loud American declaring that I have won a holiday in Florida!

It really does work. Once you're on the list it becomes an offence for anytone in the UK to cold-call you. Unfortunately they still can't stop calls coming in from outside the country but it certainly eliminates the majority of them. Plus, if anybody does ring trying to sell you double glazing you have an official channel through which to complain.
