Is the Samsung p1000 blu ray player any good?

I have seen one for £120 and was wondering if they are any good.

That is cheap for a Bluray player.

Perhaps its reduced as there is a new model out.

I personally dont like Samsung product as their history of being a budget brand is entrenched but I've not really seen any complaints about any Samsung players bar the combi HDDVD/Bluray player they had.

Their Bluray players seem to keep people happy but with Sony players next up the price scale and not being that good I expect Samsung are a good bet this early on if you dont want the best Bluray player under £700 - the PS3

These days Samsung AV equipment is far from being budget equipment. All good high quality stuff now, and would recommend their stuff highly.

It's a first gen product which never got any real praise, that's not to say at the price you would be disappointed but if it's a boxed product then there is a reason it's that price, it's long since been superseded by Samsung themselves and check out the Profile issue before buying a Blu-ray standalone.

Always a good idea to make an informed purchase regardless of the price looking a bargain

The Player is not able to play BD-R & BD-RE Media. So personally I wouldn't touch it.

Help!

I've just upgraded the firmware on my BD-P1000 in the hope that it would upgrade the player to do 24p - it doesn't.

However, it now exhibits an EXTREMELY annoying sound problem. Everything is fine except main dialogue. Whenever someone speaks, it sounds like they're somewhere else in the room rather that coming from the TV - a but like the pseudo wide stereo found on some stereos. Only dialogue sounds like this - special effects and music sounds fine.

Is there a way of turning this off? If not, I'm going to have to contact customer services as I personally can't watch anything with the sound like this.

I only use stereo so the strange audio artifact sounds very weird.

I've just checked - main dialogue is now coming out 180 degrees out of phase between left and right - effectively cancelling out the sound in some parts of the room and giving really strange effects in other.

Turning the TV into mono confirms this - no dialogue at all!

It's horrible and I can't find any settings to turn it off. It only happens on Blu-ray discs - DVDs are fine.

Samsung tell me I have to take it back to Currys as they won't deal with products bought from there as Currys bought the warranty support from Samsung.

Well, I've found a temporary fix - it still looks like the new firmware is directing all audio that's meant for the front speaker to the back - but as I currently only have stereo, turning off the back speakers in the setup screen fixes the problem for now.

The strange phase effect is a trick used in old analogue dolby digital to send audio to the back - the back channel on DD Surround was to encode the rear speaker audio 180 degrees out of phase between left and right speakers.

I hope the fix this soon as I'm hoping to buy a surround amp in the near future...

Has anyone else seen this problem? Or have I painted myself into a corner for no good reason or explanation?

I've now checked and if I wanted to use a surround amp, the front speaker and back are swapped for no good reason on my Samsung

Thanks for all the help...

Can't find anyone else with this problem on the Web? i.e. back to front sound, did you use the Australian Firmware
Best thing would be to give Samsung support a call.

Agreed 100%, problem is quite a few people live in the past & have not seen how much they have developed. They have produced a best selling BD player in the BD P1400 which according to the trade has the lowest returns of any product for a long time. I have one & can't fault it, the new model BD P1500 is already selling well with good reports.

As with all electronics from the far east, they start off cheap to break into a market & later emerge as a major player.
