Sony Bravia query
I have just purchased a Sony Bravia KDL-32S3000 and am delighted with it apart from one slight niggle. When I channel flick thro' the integrated freeview channels I occasionally get a channel showing in 4:3 ( the "wide" 16:9 format does not select automatically ) ..I then need to go into the format menu and switch manually to wide. Sky Sports News is a good example of this ...any ideas ? I am watching in SD.

Some channels and programmes are still broadcast in 4:3 and are therefore meant to be viewed this way. If you are saying that you what to automatically view 4:3 pictures as stretched widescreen format then if you have similar settings available as on my Bravia (I have a different model), try the following:
Go into Menu, Settings, Screen then set Screen Format: Wide Auto Format: On 4:3 Default: Smart The Smart setting will make a 4:3 picture fill the screen by a combination of stretching and cropping the top and bottom of the image to fit. |

The channels that are showing as 4:3 are ( as far as I know ) actually broadcast in 16:9 , eg Sky Sports News ). Playing about with the menu following your suggestion tho' I appear to have fixed the problem. The menu options were similar , I set auto format Off and screen format to Wide. Now the channels are displaying in 16:9...if a 4:3 channel does get "stretched" I can always use the menu and switch back to 4:3 manually but I am unlikely to have much occasion to do that.
Thanks |

TMF, Virgin1 and uktv History are others. uktv History broadcasts many programmes at 14:9 in a 4:3 frame but switches to widescreen for the adverts! I think most of the other main channels are widescreen in general (ignoring some of the shopping channels) but obviously do show older programmes at 4:3 sometimes.
I find the Smart setting for 4:3 on the Bravia works for me best as there is no noticeable stretch and generally you don't realise it's a 4:3 broadcast programme you're watching. But on Sky Sports News it cuts off most of the bottom scrolling banner. |

... I would add that if you use the Smart setting for 4:3 then I believe you would only ever need to use the remote to adjust the screen setting for the Sky Sports News channel and not the others. And then only if you particularly wished to see the information on the bottom scrolling banner or if only seeing the top portion of the scrolling banner was annoying.
