I have just purchased an LG 37LC55, as I was sick of my old 28" showing black bars on widescrren stuff. Now this may be a completely thick comment, but on some films, I still get black bars top and bottom of the screen. I was under the impression that a widescreen TV (16:9) got rid of these. Can anyone explain what I am doing wrong, if anything. Sky+ box set to 16:9, DVD set to 16:9, and TV set has following options....

Spectacle ( which seems to reduce the black bars of a few seconds, then goes back to as it was)
Full
Original
4:3
16:9
14:9
Zoom 1 and 2

I have it set to 16:9.

Would welcome any opinions, im very new to all this kind of thing

you have set it correctly in my view !!

but plenty will disagree

on dvds the recording maybe 1.85 and not 16.9

it annoys me too and I try and buy 16.9 if I can, check out the back of the dvd case

First off theatrical movies are made in a number of picture ratios, the two dominant ratios are 16:9 (which is used for widescreen domestic displays and is the chosen ratio for TV productions) and 2.35:1 which provides a very wide landscape for the director to use.
Even on a widescreen TV the 2.35:1 movie will have black bars at the top and bottom to make sure you see the full width without stretching the vertical image.

The general view and I one I totally agree with is that you should watch content in the ratio it was made so a 4:3 programme watch it with black bars on the left, 16:9 widescreen will fill the screen and 2.35:1 will have bars top and bottom.
When you manipulate the display to remove black bars then you are going to lose parts of the picture or reduce the image quality as it's zoomed in or out, that is your choice and you'll have to experiment to see what you prefer.

Thanks for the explanations guys. I think I will leave things as is, and make do with the black bars for 2.35-1 movies, rather than zooming.

Cheers

So..... just to clear in my mind how all this works

2.35:1 will still give me black bars yes?
Whats the difference between 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, and 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen ( for that matter whats anamorphic??). Thats whats on the back of some of my DVDs, and whcih ones will have black bars top and bottom.

Again sorry to sound dim!!

THanks again for the help

Yes, the 2.35:1 ratio is wider than 16:9 (1.85:1 or 1.78:1) so to maintain the integrity of the picture the visible image can not fill the vertical area of the display hence black bars.

In practical terms using a domestic widescreen telly there is no difference. Anamorphic widescreen is basically where the source material is in a 4:3 frame and then stretched back out by the STB or TV to widescreen, it allows the broadcasters or DVD authors to work with the legacy 4:3 format.

All current standard definition widescreen broadcasts are anamorphic where as HD is a native widescreen format.
