Any advice would be helpful. recently i bought a 36"crt philips tv. the screen is set in cinema mode. when i watch any sports programme, i cannot see the score or the number of laps because they're off screen. in films, people look like stick insects. i have tried to get into the set-up menu but cannot. the remote is a generic one. picture quality is perfect but i wish i could set it to the mode i want to watch.

the answer as you say is in the set up menu.
I found with some generic remotes if you press on enough buttons you can find almost all of the functions of the originals.
See also what button features are at the front and side panel of the tv.
If not, a proper remote for that tv should be under £20.

thanks for quick reply. any idea where i could get an original remote? i tried to get one and the price was £75. that's more than the tv cost. the set-up menu needs two buttons pressed together to gain access. they are on the generic but do not seem to have any effect.

thanks for the reply. that is the remote ihave. i cannot get into the set-up menu. according to the tv instruction manual the two inner buttons on the 2nd. row from the bottom, when press together open the set-up menu. when i press them nothing happens. the remote is perfect at all other functions. i bought it five weeks ago, so i don't think it's button failure. any ideas would be gratefully received.

I take your point about the two buttons not working but even if they did the "Installation" menu won't do what you want...although there is an "auto format" on/off selection within the "Installation" and "Setup" sub-menu if you look at the bottom row of buttons in the pic of the remote in the user manual you'll see the "picture format" button on the bottom row, 2nd from right...each push of that will select a different screen aspect ratio and when it's on movie expand 14x9/16x9 or super zoom you can move the pic up/down with the cursor up/down button to make sub-titles visible...even if "auto format" is set to on.

You don't have the original remote so the buttons on the direct replacement model you have will be in a different place...just look for one with a similar icon on it as the original.
A direct replacement remote must have the same functions as the original so persevere...the set is too good to dump.

I love the picture quality but today i was watching the motogp and i could not see what lap it was or the ticker tape at the bottom of the screen. It gets me sooooo flustrated. thank you for your time and suggestions.
