The Unicorn And The Wasp - Review

Here is my usual weekly review. This episode sees the show back on form somewhat after the execrable "The Doctober's Daughter"

Please, comment, review the review etc!

You've already posted this in another thread... so here're my comments about your review from that thread.

Quote:
“One wouldn't normally associate illegitimacy and homosexuality as themes - either major or minor - that a writer would choose when penning an episode of Doctor Who. It is a surprise that these themes should be countenanced in a show of this nature...”

They were not "themes" - merely minor background detail. But both have been "themes" in previous episodes of New Who - did you ever see The Empty Child?

Quote:
“Doctor Who has long had a huge gay fan base but until now has not had any overtly gay characters appear...”

Really? What about the elderly lesbian couple in Gridlock? The soldier that Jack seduces to cause a diversion in The Doctor Dances?

Quote:
“This brings us to the first issue I brought up at the start of this review - the subject of illegitimacy. Again, not something that the series brings up often - it wasn't even raised as an issue during the whole forty five minutes of the execrable “The Doctor's Daughter”, the previous episode.”

Why should it be? The "daughter" was cloned.

Quote:
“It tried very hard to be a classic episode but perhaps it tried too hard.”

I disagree strongly. It was billed as Series 4's "light-hearted" episode, and did not take itself seriously at all. Which is probably why it will become one of the all-time classics.
