If that's how it is then my guess would be that no one pointed out to them exactly how the 12 songs they had to list that afternoon would be used in the show.

i wasn't very impressed with the song choice for jessie. i mean it's a lovely song, used to be one of my favouries, but it's too 'nice'. didn't do her any favours at all. she's had some cracking performances (e.g. one night only), and needs to come back with another like that
This show is all about manipulating the public to choose the girl that ALW and Cameron wanted from the beginning. Those that threaten to overturn this result are handicapped by any means possible.An obvious way is through song choice. The fact that the bbc lied about these songs being simply the gir choices just makes the lack of a level playing field more despicable. Even if the songs were on an original list of 12 songs the girls came up with , it wouldn't take much suggestion from ALW or others to drive these choices in a particular direction and then claim it was their choice.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sam for instance was oached in one direction and Jodie in another.

Hi, I have always read these forums, but have not as yet posted anything.. however after reading this thread I had to sign up just to clarify a few things...
I CAN ABSOLUTELY CONFIRM THAT ALL THE GIRLS CHOSE THEIR OWN SONGS! I am a sibling of one of the Nancy's and therefore feel that it is only fair to set things straight as I feel it is unfair for Mr Spielberg to manipulate you any more.. I have no doubt that Mr S. does work for the BBC cuz I (as well as the BBC may I add) have been monitoring your posts for a while and know that the majority of what you are saying is real inside information..
I'm not going to try to persuade you to vote for my sister because I think everyone should decide for themselves... Vote for who YOU feel deserves the role of Nancy!

I think there may be some double standards going on within the show!
I think it may well be the case that some girls chose their own song from their original list but I also know for a fact that some of the girls were given a song from their original list - whether they would have been able to change their song i don't know because i'm not sure if it arised.

Does it really matter now anyway?!?! Whether they were given or chose their songs, the fact of the matter is they all sang a song from their original 12. To have the song on the list in the first place means that each Nancy was confident enough in their own ability to sing it.

Funny how many people on forums clain to know or be related to contestants.
They probably got to select their song off a selective list, particularly aimed at each singer.......now they could safely say they picked their own song then.....just the choice was not that great to start with..........

My guess is that there was an element of choice involved (so that they could claim the contestants chose their songs, or however they carefully worded it), but that it was not a free choice. However they manipulated it - whether by having them choose a song from a list provided, by guiding them in a particular direction (eg by saying you need to choose a song that will show characteristic X, such as song Y), or by enforcing a particular song choice from a list perhaps hastily compiled by the contestants weeks ago - I'm betting it was not quite as straightforward as it seemed.
