The review of this TV on HDTVorg states -

"Sony makes great play of the KDL-32W4000's 10-bit panel and its ability to display a 6.2 Mega Pixel resolution image."

But, looking on the Sony website it appears to have an 8 bit panel. If it is 8 bit, wouldn't this be rather inferior to the larger sets in the 4000 range?

8 bits gives you over 16 million colours, I doubt moving to 10 bit is really visible at all?.

I have a Samsung LE40M86 with a 10 bit panel which is excellent but not long after I bought mine the spec. was reduced to 8 bit which caused numerous complaints about the model, people said it did not look a vibrant etc.

Now I'm not sure if this was the case or simply customers thinking they had been short changed!

I don't know how much difference it will make, it could make a difference or it may not.

The one thing you can absolutely guarantee without question is that an improved spec will mean many people will see a better picture whether there is any real difference or not. It's human nature (they are not liars they are absolutely convinced of what their eyes show them) and you see it all the time on this forum.

Hello!

As an HDTV newbie myself, could I ask how the bit stuff works? As a computer geek I see 8 bits as only 256, and 10 bits as 1024. Is this different in TV?

You're right - but that's the number of bits for each colour component. So with 8 bits for each of R, G and B, you have the potential to produce 16.7 million colours.
