1st July 2005.
BT did advertise it on TV, the radio and in the Update magazine they sent out. It's only free as part of BT Privacy www.bt.com/btprivacy - just phone up the number and it's activated, if you already have Caller Display then by activating via the phone number it becomes free. BT won't back date any fees paid for caller display as it is still a chargeable item unless you get it via BT Privacy. Then a year or so later they implemented you must make at least two chargeable calls each month (or 6 per quarter if quarterly billing) recently since the inclusive weekend basic package, they call either has to be chargeable or inclusive. If your calls go via another provider then prefix the call with 1280 to place to call back over BT - if with Sky Talk you'll want to put 0845 and 0870 numbers via BT due to the Sky high prices. |

![]() When I got my retentions deal VM offered to install a phone line for free, give me free line rental and free calls package as well as discount on the TV and broadband. For as long as I remain a customer. They should have just let me have another year on the deal I was on, they extended it once, but wouldn't again, yet the offer they ended up giving me was even better. I wasn't using a landline, I was using VoIP over VM broadband, but thought might as well have the landline if it's not costing me anything. (Previously had BT line, due to cable being poor value for money - but OK if free). I forgot about Caller Display so called VM back and said BT and Sky don't charge for caller display and it's part of VoIP so no charge there either, would you be able to offer it free too, they said yeah, that's not a problem. |

exactly! And it doesn't even give full details when my parents phone from Germany...it only says international! Of course when I call them they get my full number...stupid!
![]() Only a handful of calls come up with the number from abroad. I've found more come up on my cable number than did with BT, however on my VoIP line they all come up. I suppose it depends on where the call lands first, it might be the telco in Germany sends calls via the BT network to your locality and then passes it over to cable as it's cheaper to do that than send it direct to the cable network at entry into the UK. BT are renowned for masking the CLID of international calls as they either can't trust the CLID from the provider or the provider doesn't allow the person to withhold their number. |
