BBC Radio London's sports team:

Not one single post here on the capital's local Beeb station and their MB has closed down - an indication no one's listening, or that the mandarins at the top don't care?

Must be the latter. Two words that define the very worst in aural assault and battery:
STEVE BUNCE

Two more that define a man quite out of his depth in the medium of broadcasting:
TOM WATT

Apologies for being Londoncentric, the rest of the UK don't know how lucky you are.

MB?

BBC London gave good coverage of London football in 2007-08 and I would expect it to continue in 2008-09. The senior commentary team was Phil Parry and Clive Walker and the station has other good commentators in Kevin Hand, Nick Godwin and Andy Rowley to name but three.

Quick q re Martin Gillingham on Five Live - is this the former athlete that commentates for Eurosport?

There was a controversial sports presenter of the same name in South Africa for a few years - not the same one surely?

Could've been. Eurosport yesterday (for the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace) had Tim Hutchings and Some other Guy.

The some other guy being Martin Gillingham... so just curious if there's only one Martin Gillingham, who must have the world's most amazing CV... or a number of namesakes?

Lofty! He was on talk sport for a couple of years, did a show called It's Round and It's White (in the days when it was white). I used to think he was pretty good

Agree with comments about Steve Bunce. Cant help but think there's a bit of 'token' presenterism (if there isn't such a word there should be!) going on there.

Have to disagree about Tom Watt. He's a Gooner but listen to him take calls from supporters of ALL teams and he is knowledgable about what he's talking about. Unlike those presenters on Radio 5 who are only interested in the bloody premier league.

It is reported elsewhere on the web that BBC Essex will not be providing full commentary on all Southend and Colchester away games in the coming season as they have done previously.

Apparently they will only be providing commentary on selected games and will instead have a 'Soccer Saturday' type programme on Saturday afternoons.

Sounds like a cost-cutting measure by a non-football supporting Station manager !!

It's the same bloke who was in South Africa. I'm not sure he was that controversial was he? He used to do mostly rugby and athletics commentary there as well. Now doing the same here.

I guess the only Leeds games that will be FM next season will be the home and away against Huddersfield on BBC Radio Leeds and possibly the two Scunthorpe games on BBC Radio Humberside, plus and cup games featuring other Yorkshire sides.

Martin moved back to the UK about 5 years ago and did some overnight shows on talkSPORT for a few months.

He once spoke movingly about how a close relative of his housekeeper died of AIDS- and he sounded very angry about the chauvanistic attitudes he saw in South Africa towards sex and protection.

He's also VERY anti-boxing. Now works freelance for 5 Live and Eurosport.

Incidentally, Real Radio Wales were advertising for freelancers to cover games a few weeks ago. A mate of mine applied and apparently they'll make their decision early next week.

So are Mark Poyser, Sam Fleet, Mark Threadgold, Hamish Stuart and Steve Fleming still doing reports for Real Radio Wales or is the station increasing the matches covered?

Mark Poyser is the guy making the decisions regarding who they hire, and will presumably continue to do match reports. Sam Fleet is increasingly busy with his job as head of news. Don't know about the rest. I remember Mark Threadgold from the days of Capital Gold Sportstime, he nearly always covered rugby as I recall.

Thanks for the information and good luck to your mate. Mark Threadgold has filed more football reports of late, Hamish Stuart has concentrated on Rugby Union (he is/was a Rugby Union reporter for one of the Welsh newspapers) and Steve Flemming used to freelance, I think, in the East Midlands but reported regularly, mainly away, for Real Radio Wales.
Mark.

Has there been any confirmation yet on which station will have the Manchester United commentary rights this season?

XFM had them last season but I'm not aware of any promise from them to continue.

So who else might take them?

Century? Unlikely to take them back, especially with The Legends now finishing.

Key 103? Back to the days of commentary on both Manchester clubs.

BBC Manchester? Would a BBC local have the cash to buy the rights?
