“BBC Furious at Final Day Premier League Coverage
Added: Friday 29th May

BBC Radio 5 Live are aiming to change the terms of the Premier League radio rights after being forced to commentate on the second biggest game of day: Hull v Manchester United on the final day of the season, reports the Daily Express.

According to the newspaper, sources at the BBC admitted they would rather have been at Villa Park for Aston Villa against Alan Shearer’s Newcastle last Sunday rather than Hull against Manchester United. However, the terms of their agreement with talkSPORT, who own one package of games as opposed to the BBC’s seven, are that the selections for games must be made ten days in advance.

At that stage, there was still the chance of Manchester United needing something at the KC Stadium to clinch the Premier League title so the BBC felt they could not afford to miss out on that, hence talkSPORT enjoying a clear run at undoubtedly the real story of last Sunday, despite having a second choice of the fixtures on offer.

Management at BBC Radio 5 Live are said to be “mystified” that the arrangement should be there when the television choices between Sky Sports and Setanta, including the logistics that, can be sorted in the final week of the season. But talkSPORT are say they are happy with the arrangement: “The BBC took a punt on the outcome of the title race and got it wrong. Simple as that.”

BBC Radio 5 Live’s and talkSPORT’s contracts with the Premier League to provide national commentary of matches is set to expire at the end of the 2009-2010 season.”

I understand completely where the BBC are coming from.

Things should be changed so that final-day radio picks can wait until it's known what games are the important ones, otherwise it can leave the concept of "first" and "second" picks meaningless.

And of course, it could have been even worse: what if Man Utd had been playing a different team such that their game was completely meaningless?

The BBC already has a huge advantage over talkSPORT because of the difference in funding. They have had all of the top matches this season (including all the "big 4" head to head matches), and now they start bleating because for once talkSPORT has a more attractive commentary match.

Where does it end? Will the BBC ask for the rules to be changed so that they can have all seven packages, and shut out talkSPORT completely like they did in the old days.

If this rule is changed I can see talkSPORT making a protest to the DCMS about the BBC's dominant position when it comes to radio rights for the Premier League.

The BBC bid the most money and won the right to chose the "first pick" match every week. But when it comes to the final day (and indeed, even the penultimate day), it's ludicrous to have them choosing before the previous round of fixtures, because there's always the chance of ending up with a game that's either not the "first pick" or, worse, totally meaningless.

I don't see what grounds talkSPORT would have to make a protest about the DCMS. It would surely be along the lines of "we've only got the package of second pick games, but we want to have the chance of getting a first pick, so the rule should stay as it is".

(And in the interests of balance, it's perfectly possible for the "meaningless game" issue to effect talkSPORT as well, so any change to the rule could end up benefitting them in the long run.)

I think this is a storm in a tea cup, about something very small

If we look at the matches that were on the radio, they were also on Sky television so you would have either been at the match, watching on the telly or listening to your own BBC local radio station

I would normally listen to the radio commentaries on match day,but decided to go down the pub and watch the action

Most of those who would have been listening would have been listening in thier cars, and after this weeks report about listening to football commentaries in our cars maybe listening to radio commentaries(whilst driving) might not be a good idea

I think the normal listening figures for BBC five live on Saturday afternoons is 3,000 000 million,so I don't think many of us footy fans would have been listening to the radio commentaries,as the matches were live on Sky

Apaert from the fact that 3,000 000 million is mind-boggling , I managed to avoid radio commentary and reports (as I was out for the day) and watch MOTD without knowing what had happened earlier in the day.

I believe that IRN's reporter at Wembley is Simon Owen. Either I mis-heard Radio Clyde's handover or the station got it wrong.

I'll put up next weekend's information for talkSPORT and then the following Wednesday for the World Cup Qualifiers but then I think that'll be me done for the summer (although I'll probably do some of the other sports reporters sometimes).

Next Saturday will be quite a busy day for sport with World Cup Qualifiers, The Derby, British Lions and England Rugby, World Twenty20 Cricket and F1 Qualifying.

Totally agree with what you've written there Westward.

This sounds distinctly like a bad case of sour grapes on the part of BBC Five Live to me.

They missed out on being able to do commentary of one top game - one measly game! - and are now bleating about changing the terms of the deal because of it.

It's funny to see how BBC Sport react when the boot is on the other foot, seeing as many of their broadcasters/bosses used to moan about Sky Sports' monopoly over the TV coverage of the Premier League, while happily enjoying a similar monopoly in radio.

One thing that's not mentioned is why games are picked 10 days in advance (not just for the final day of the season, but generally).

I would imagine both stations have a number of considerations they have to sort out a fair while before broadcasting a commentary - assigning a commentary/production team, allowing enough time to arrange transport and accommodation if necessary, producing promotional trailers for the commentaries etc.

For those reasons, I think it's understandable for Saturday games to be chosen a fair while in advance.

The quote from the talkSPORT spokesman in the article 4-4-2 posts sums it up for me. The BBC took a punt on the outcome of the title race. They got it wrong. Sometimes that's the way it goes.

To be honest I don't think it will come to that.

Instead I could see the Premier League, Five Live and talkSPORT sitting down when negotiating EPL radio rights from the 2010/11 season onwards (where, incidentally, I see the deals staying pretty much as they are) and coming to a compromise situation about this.

Perhaps the three parties could come to an agreement where Five Live get a degree of flexibility as to which games they pick on the final two "Saturday" 3pm match programmes (ie they can change their pick after games have taken place), with talkSPORT's current package of 32 games being extended to 38 live games (meaning they can provide a commentary on a secondary game played in each of the Boxing Day, New Year's Day, full midweek programme etc rounds of matches, rounds where under the current deal they can't). This would seem fair to me.

If someone could cover the Welsh involvement in the WC2010 qualifiers tomorrow on Radio Wales/Cymru that'll be great. I'm working most of the evening (meaning my PVR's will go into overdrive for the rugby taking place) so may not be able to hear how the game goes.
