Best VCR out there?
Tempest84
22-05-2008
I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good models of VCR out there at the moment? My current one seems to have packed in due to age. I archive most shows to hdd these days, but I still have a large collection of tapes. I'd consider a combi DVD/HDD unit but my main concern would be that the playback device that gave high quality vhs recording and playback. Does anyone have any VCR recommendations, or know of any internet sites that ship VCRS to Ireland? A google search didn't throw up many results ...

There are no decent VCR's out there - VCR is effectively dead, it's all moved to DVD or PVR.

Even the expensive make DVD/VCR combos only have really cheap nasty VCR's in them.

as above, sourcing a good vcr now is pretty much impossible, i would say your best bet is to look on ebay, in my experience i would go for a Panasonic, we've still got 3 vcr's in the house of varying ages by Panasonic and all still work perfectly fine

EBAY may well be the VCR graveyard.

I'd even say bypass ebay and take a look first in places like Ymca if you've got a dedicated electrical shop, they have pretty good stuff in there and at darn good value. Plus remember theres no poastage unlike on ebay, it all come gaurentteed and it's all been given an electrical MOT before being put on show. These days just like crt tv's there seems to be loads of them being handed in as people move over to dvd and hdd.

I would say Sanyo will be the best. This is down to my experience with a Sanyo VCR we've had for 14 and a half yrs, it's still just as good now as it was then and I can honestly tell you I never had a problem with it in all that time. It still looks just as good too, and believe it or not as far as I'm aware the original Sanyo batteries are still in the remote too.

A bet if you checked round your friends and relations, you will find a number of VCRs gathering dust which you could then take off their hands.

If I were looking for a quality VCR, I would look around for a JVC Super VHS machine, as an eBay seller of electronics I have sold two over the last eighteen months or so, and got very good prices for them both, they do cost quite a bit more that your normal cheapy VCR, but well worth the extra.

Just as an add-on to the above.
Anyone that wants to copy VHS tape material to DVD should always consider a Super VHS machine, because they will both have the sockets to connect them together with a S-VHS lead and separate stereo audio leads, this way you will get the best possible reproduction.
