i am trying to find newer ones, but also according to Zoe this series has a higher standard of talent than HDYSAPLM.

i guess we don't know anything. ha ha

I read her column in The Stage this morning very briefly (and surreptitiously as I didn't intend to buy it -- oops) and as far as I can remember she says Rachel was vocally fine not outstanding, Sam was daring but average, Jodie's song choice couldn't ever have shown what she was challenged to show but she did OK, and Jessie was all right.

Have I got this right? Apologies if not, I did read it very quickly and my memory isn't what it used to be
I normally find the column entertaining, but thought it was a bit dull and repetitive today

can you link me to the one today or this week... i can't find them all. it just surprises me that all of us think the standard isn't very good this year and yet Zoe thinks is is better than HDYSAPLM. I do agree with her though on some of those Maria girls, I mean what where they thinking? I love Zoe, btw.

I think what it is is that the worst Maria's were worse than the worst Nancy's (Simona anyone?) but the final five Maria's were all of a higher standard vocally and generally better allrounder's than the final five Nancy's (with the expection of Siobhan who couldn't act for s***).

Don't get me started on Simona!!!!!!!!!!!! lol - Briony would have progressed at least, how the hell did they think she would learn to not sing in that accent, and I am sorry, but no way no how was she even close to Maria...Evita esque maybe....with work

I think Jocko Homo is right about the worst Nancies being better than the worst Marias. Perhaps we are more discerning now than we were when the format was brand new (kind of) and before we'd enjoyed the delights of ADWD.

It may also be that because Connie was nearly always the front runner we compared the good performances from the Marias to Connie's performances; with no front runner in IDA we've nothing to compare their performances to apart from our own standards. That's probably a long shot but there may be an element of truth in it. I know that personally, because I've got no background or training in MT, I can only judge on what I see and hear, and so my standard for what's good and what's fantastic, fantastic, fantastic is probably quite arbitrary.

This series has REALLY missed Zoe's input. The criteria which JB, DVO and BH uphold is bland by comparison. I know her comments were often limited to their vocal performances but I think a good percentage of the viewing public are laymen in that respect (unlike the majority of DS posters who are experts, not like me --I wish I were!).

Piper it said somewhere in the Stage that her column would be in the print edition only.

yes I think some parts of Cananda are more British than us.......

While Zoe's column is in the print edition of The Stage only, next week she and I are recording a podcast discussing the series as a whole and looking forward to the final.
