Hi all,

Joined a while back, more of a reader then poster.
However, today I have a question.

I don't know too much on the techy front but I am trying to hook up my DVD surround sound system to my TV.
The DVD system is fairly old but good sound quality.
On the back it as no optical out point, an s-video point (what do they do) and a scart lead - which I currently use to connect it to the TV.
Sony TV KDL40X2000 and Sky HD box.
1) Can I connect the TV to the DVD player so I can watch TV programs/the odd film in surround sound?
2) If not, is there another way "around it" to connect my dvd player to the HD box to the TV or am I grasping at strews?

Many thanks in advance for any help/suggestions/ideas.

Cheers

David

You should be getting sound via your SCART lead - you probably need to simply turn the volume up.

S-video is an alternative to SCART, although SCART often supports S-Video (which, I know, sounds odd).

Generally, RGB is he preferred connection method and most DVD players only offer this via the SCART connection - but few notice much of a difference between S-Video and SCART/VGA.

The "Optical Out" is for digital surround sound and needs to be connected to a digital amplifier or receiver. Allowing you to turn down the sound on the telly, and let your hi-fi take over the sound burden.

If the sound system has AUX inputs you should be able to connect it up to the TV.

These are normally two RCA inputs coloured red/white, you will also need these connections on the back of your TV, normally labeled audio outputs.

A pair of phonos will be required to connect the two together, then it will just be a case of selecting AUX on the sound system, you should then be able to listen to your TV via the sound system.

Whether surround sound will be available to you will depend on the system, some allow DPL where some only let you listen in stereo.
