Part I: Evictee David Let's It All Hang Out in Latest Candid Interview

Note: Since this interview is so long, I was forced to post it in 2 separate threads. Sorry for the inconconvenience Part I: Candid Interview with Big Brother Evictee David Lane Q. I thought you were a real stand up guy and a lot of fun. We were sad to see you go. A. Hey, that’s what everyone’s saying! Oh, funny! I appreciate that! There are a bunch of boring people in there. I had a fun time. Q. That’s not your problem, being boring. A. No, no. Definitely not! I thrived off of everyone’s reaction on how explicit I can get. Q. You kind of get people going. A. Yeah. I definitely get them going either with me or against me. But either way I still get a kick out of their reaction. Q. You have an Andy Kaufman type approach. A. Yeah, I love Andy Kaufman. That guy’s a genius, man. I love his source of comedy. I love what goes on in his head, or what went on in his head, and I found a sense of that in me when I was on the show. I actually stared down a camera, I think, for five minutes. Just didn’t do anything but just look into it. I pictured there’s some monitors somewhere where they’re looking at me and that’s just my face staring at them. I had to be freaking somebody out. And just that whole thought, was so entertaining to me. And when somebody would walk by, they were, "What are you doing?" I’m cursing this camera and whoever’s watching it right now. And the funny thing is when I got out of the house, they told me that that camera actually stopped working when I left. When I actually walked away from it, it wouldn’t move anymore. Q. So you were working the cameras at times? A. Oh definitely. I always threw messages at the cameras. I messed with the people who are behind the cameras. I’d try to get reactions out of them. I’d do a lot of things wrong just to try to get people to yell at me over the intercom. I tried to yell some shout outs on the internet – “What’s up guys?” “You freaking weirdoes!” Q. How did you get on Big Brother 4? I can’t really imagine you making an audition tape. A. Yeah, I’m glad you said that. I didn’t make a tape at all. I met a guy at a party in Venice Beach who happened to be a casting guy. And it turned out it was two days before they had all the finalists flown into LA. So it was just luck of the draw, right place at the right time. I definitely don’t watch much reality TV, and the reality TV that I have watched, I thought those shows need a guy like me to stir things up. So I saw this chance. They told me $500,000 cash was the prize at the end, and I thought I’d be stupid to pass it up. Q. Were you entertaining at the party as well? A. I wasn’t like that at the party. Actually, the funny thing is nobody saw my goofy side during any of the interviews. I was just straightforward. Yeah, I cracked some jokes and stuff. I guess they just like my vibe on TV. But no one knew that I get so goofy, especially when I get pent up like that. So that’s funny how I got on the show without them knowing that. A. So they pulled you in at the last moment, and they had to get Michelle as well. A. Yep, yep. Last moment. They got her info through me. Q. You seemed to have a large focus to having a good time. A. Yeah. Life’s too short to stress out about anything. And the house is designed to get on people’s nerves and test people’s limits. I’ve already been tested on limits far beyond anything that house can dish out so I’m not going to sit there and be miserable about peanut butter and jelly or that I can’t see a movie or I can’t go shopping like the girls were all bitching about. So I definitely just try to make the best time that I could out of it, and in doing so, I don’t regret anything that I did in there. Q Did anything get on your nerves? A. Yeah, all the people got on my nerves. What got on my nerves the most was that everyone was hypocritical as far as saying this house if full of a bunch of high schoolers when they themselves would act really immature and talk behind other people’s back. That’s all they did – talk behind other people’s backs. They’d go on about Oh see how he does this and how she does that, ne, ne , ne. And I’m witnessing this and these guys are ten years older than me. I should be the one doing this. I was the youngest one left when Michelle left. A lot of people haven’t had too much life experience, and they think that they do and that really bugged me as well. Q. You seem to be super confident. Yet my impression of you in the house was that you really didn’t want to win that badly. Is that accurate or was that part of your game strategy? A. It was both. Yeah, I wanted to win. I wanted to win badly, but I’m definitely more of a realist than anything. And I knew it was a slim, 7%, chance for me out of 13 people going to the end. I went in there thinking I’m not going to win and if I do win, it will be a great surprise. But it was part of the strategy as well. I was pretty sure I had Jee fooled for the first few days. He said to me "Dave, that’s great. You’re here, and you really don’t care if you win or lose. You’re a happy go lucky guy.” It worked. The goofiness and stuff was a front for my intelligence, but it’s kind of hard to hide that. I can hold my own when it comes to smarts. I don’t know how to say that without sounding like a cocky asshole. Q. I thought you brought a classy presence to the house. A. Really? I appreciate that. Q. Did the X Factor hurt you, given that both you and Michelle are out of the house? A. I don’t think the X Factor had anything to do with my leaving the show. It had a big effect towards the beginning because everyone was in such shock. And I’m sure America was like, “Oh my God, their exes!” For me and Michelle, it was no big deal at all; we went out five years ago. Q. It seemed to be fun for you. Yeah, I had a blast teasing her and getting reactions out of her as well. I got a lot of them. I don’t know how many you guys saw. She had some fits. Q. Yeah, you knocked that lettuce down. A. Yeah, that was great! Actually everyone else was signaling me to, “Rip it off! Rip it off!” as I was sneaking up behind them. I figured I got to do it for them. I got a yelling at for that too. Q. Do you think the X Factor will help anyone that’s still in the house? A. The X Factor might help Jun and Jee. My gut on the whole thing was that they were kind of in it together. They still act like they were pissed off at each other here and there, but I still feel like they were secretly aligned together, not really telling too many other people and I think they could be benefiting, because they know they can trust each other at least. To a certain extent, they know each other so well, and I think that will work out for them. But as people start catching on to their alliance together, they’re going to want to split it up. I think it will work against them. Q. That’s a good call, by the way. A. Oh really? That’s for sure? That’s what they’re doing, huh? That’s funny man. Q. Did losing Scott hurt the Original Eight Alliance? A. Oh, completely. That was a vote that we needed and that was someone we could have had on our side and it would have changed the outlook on a lot of things, and it could have pulled the target off of my back and put it on his instead. Scotty was just kicking chairs over. It was funny. It was just funny. But everyone blew it out of proportion. I was laughing, and Allison was having a breakdown, “Dave I don’t that this is funny. You’re sitting here laughing, and I’m really scared.” I was like, “Oh my God, what is wrong these people?” Q. They played it seriously on TV. A. Oh, they did? It’s part of strategy. They all acted scared because they knew they could get him out for that. (PART II continues in a separate thread) |
