Blu-ray questions

I have a few questions before i take the plunge and go HD. I already have the BRAVIA 1080P TV so to get the best out of it i intend to upgrade to a SONY BLU-RAY dvd, Is blu-ray the preffered format now, as VHS was over its rivals ? and secondly my favourite films are mostly older films films such as the blues bros or the dirty harry series. so how would a blu-ray version of these films compare to a standard DVD version ? i guess im trying to ask if there would be a huge difference on the blu-ray format seeing as these particular films were shot in the days of old..............

At this time Blu-ray is the only domestic HD format, still some questions marks over it's furture as anything but a niche product but for now it's the only game in town

Virtually all movies made for a theatrical release have more information in a 35mm analogue frame than a 1920*1080 digital frame, so no real worries there. The main issue is the quality of the print the new HD master is created from, some are literally grab a print , scan it and there you go while other companies pay for a cleaning or full restoration.

Details on the upcoming Dirty Harry boxset.
