I am having a major headache over surround sound. I have the following: Sony Bravia TV, Sony Bravia DvD Home Cinema and a PS3. I can get surround sound for my tv but im having no joy at all with setting up the ps3 in surround sound. I have all the cables required, HDMI and even an digital optical lead but no matter which way i configure this I still dont get any surround sound. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I just missing something obvious?
Any feedback much appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Could just be the settings on the PS3.

The model number of the surround system would help.

The tv is a Sony KDL40V3000 - 40'' Widescreen Bravia 1080P Full HD LCD TV - With Freeview and the home cinema is a Sony DAV-DZ230 - DVD Home Cinema System with Bravia Theatre Sync.
I have tried numerous settings in the ps3 sound menu but still no joy.

If you connect your PS3 directly to your TV using HDMI, without having the home cinema in the middle, does audio as well as video get passed to the TV (i.e. can you hear as well as see the game that you are playing)?

If so, the PS3 is correctly outputting audio through the HDMI cable. Now connect the HDMI cable to your amp, connect a second HDMI cable from amp to TV, and select the correct input on the amp for the PS3. Do you still get a picture? Do you still get audio? Is the audio in DD surround sound? If so, you have achieved what you wanted to do. If not, let us know whether you get no picture, no sound, sound but not surround sound, etc. At that point we can tell you whether it is you PS3 that is at fault, or whether it is your home cinema that is at fault. Or what settings you need to change to correct it.

Cheers Dave.
Think this is maybe why i am having a problem with it as at the back of the amp i only have the one socket for a HDMI cable. Therefore am i going to be unable to have surround for my ps3 with there only been the one socket?
With regards to the other question, yes when i connect the hdmi cable from the ps3 i do get a picture and sound coming out of the tv.

That won't work.

The Sony Home Theatre system the OP has doesn't have any HDMI inpuits. It just has a single HDMI output. So no way to route the PS3 via the home Theatre system.

The DAV-DZ230 is seriously lacking in connection options. As far as I can see the only ways to get audio into it are from the SCART socket, a 3.5mm jack socket on the front and this mystereious Digital media Port on the back.

And there is sod all in the manual to describe what this Digital media port can do. In fact from what little it does say i am not entirely convinced it is even "digital".

So it is not at all obvious how to connect a digital audio source to it to get full surround. Or even if it is possible. As i say details of this Digital Media port are somewhat lacking. And in any case it seems no adapters are provided and I have yet to find any details of what adapters might be available.

Just had a look on Sony's site and it doesn't look like the DZ230 has an optical input, therefore you will be unable to listen to surround via the DZ230/PS3.

The system doesn't look to have an other audio inputs either.

Basically it's will just play 5.1 from DVD which is all it's designed to do.

Have you just purchased this? If so and you are in a position to add a little more to what you have already spent, take it back and purchase a system that caters more for your needs.

I can point you to a few systems around £200 that would do exactly what you are wanting to do.

Well I have a freesat box for which iv connected a hdmi cable to from the home cinema so i do get surround sound from watching freesat but obviously not the ps3 so at least i can watch tv in surround sound. Just a pain I cant connect it in a way that'll let me use my ps3 in surround sound.
Cheers for your input anyways Tommy

The PS3 is set up correctly.

The DZ230 is the problem as it lacks a digital input, how you have it connected now is the best it gets I'm afraid.
