We are moving in a few weeks (only 5 miles down the road, so not using removal men) and something has just occurred to me - How to move my 42" plasma tv without the box it came in.

I was thinking of laying a duvet down in the back of a car and laying it down and driving over, but I've read somewhere that plasma tvs shouldnt be transported laid flat - any reaosn why?

What is the best way to move this tv without damaging it?

Plasmas shouldn't be laid on their back as the screen is made of glass, any stress and the glass will flex and crack. Always transport upright.

Wrap it up in your duvet by all means and transport it in the van, secure it in between the sofa/chairs, use the cushions for extra padding, if you can get family/friends to keep an eye on it in the back.

Interesting. When I bought mine in the box I had a job fitting it in the back of the car. I had to lay it out flat and struggled to get it to fit in the back even with the seats down.

Got it home ok and started to assemble and the instructions for fitting the stand were to lay it flat on it's front then insert the stand into the tv itself at the back!

Plasmas can be laid flat and even watched in this position, but should not be transported this way. If you were to hit a bump then the glass could crack. Also I believe the shacking during transport can stress the internal structure o the plasma pannel.

When I moved recently I put my 40" LCD on the back seat of my car, screen facing fowards, and put both seatbelts around it, right seatbelt into left seatbelt socket, and vice versa, worked well.

I was told, albeit by the bloke in Currys, that plasmas should be kept upright because of the gas inside, something which seemed quite logical to me. I've never heard about the possibility of the glass cracking if you move them lying down, although both problems seem to be issues, especially with a flat screen with no give in it.
