We have regularly grown our own chillis, from seed packets (Apache) from which 10 seeds gave us 9 plants, of which we gave 4 away and which were so laden with chillis we still have some pickled ones left from over 10 years ago. We have also grown from supermarket chillis but our current plants came from Simpson Seeds at Horningsham (near Longleat) but the site is under maintenance. We bought them mid-summer last year and have been using the chillis since the Autumn, we overwintered them on the kitchen windowsill (the plants are about 2'6" - 3' tall) and are just showing new season flowers and will be moved to our utility room (more natural light in the summer but it's too cold for over-wintering) soon.

Google should find you plenty of suppliers.

another question, god i seem very ignorant, but am i meant to do this for each new flower? or once its been done once, it will produce chillis all over? and am i supposed to do it every year?

I wasn't thinking of a proper garden centre just diy stores that happen to have plant areas - Homebase, B&Q, Wilko's etc. Supermarkets depending on size will sometimes have plants as well. I don't drive either so I'm limited to what I can get to on the bus.

This site has some growing tips with pictures & forums

Good Luck.

I am growing Chillies at the moment. I got them from B&Q a few weeks ago as seedlings and they are doing really well, they have flowers coming already. Mine are outside too. I have grown chilies many times before but I always forget to water them towards the end of summer and they end up dying Hence buying the new ones. I have to say I have grown them in my conservatory only before and they have done really well and I didn't pollinate them either.

I grew three Jalapino Chillis from seed bought at the local garden centre last year, raising them in a small conservatory. A lot of the flowers fell, until I was told they needed to be pollinated with a small artist's brush (as previously mentioned). This procedure only takes seconds. Just transfer the pollen from flower to flower as they open. I had green chillies until late Summer, then as they turn red you have the choice. Although Jalapinos are supposedly a Pizza chilli, the longer the red were left, the hotter they became(I strung them as you do with garlic). It's advisable to get a planter with a reservoir, for the times you forget to water them. Feed them with tomorite,it worked for me. Unlike my Sweet peppers which weren't very successful.... Any tips?. Didn't know you could overwinter the plants (Thanks SRD).

tomorite is that tomato feed?

ive bought some of that becauseit says on the back its good for chillis and peppers.

baby bio just makes the stalks of plants very very long i have found...!

whats a reservoir? is it just like a saucer? ive noticed mine is a thirsty chap too! i need to water it every day, not like my pease. one day its leaves were wilting, i gave it a drink and within about 0 minutes it was all perky and bright!!!

can you over water it?

Yes tomorite is a tomato food but don't use it until you have flowers on the plant. Then use it every couple of days as you would for tom's But water every morning. Yes you can overwater, just keep the soil damp, more sun more water.

Don't worry about a resevoir, it's just a long trough with a false bottom that holds water underneath.(they're for absent minded old buggers like me

If you Google chilli care you'll find advice, or go to
www.virginwholesale.co.uk for a few tips.

Good Luck (Be careful chopping the red ones or )

I got some tomato feed, and its leaves look nicer and its not getting silly long stalks like with baby bio!

However, despite my fingering the flowers every day for about 2 weeks, i sitll have no sign of any chillis i think its sterile...

Could depend on the variety, some will flower and fruit later in the year than others.

Check to see if you've any little green buds popping through, but no sweat there's loads of time yet, especially where your located. I do great with mine in the deep dark north

I wasn't aware you could have babies from fingering.

ok will try it, even though it sounds rude. we should be "fingering " the flowers themselves as they appear should we? I got the impression from previus posts that it meant the leaves?

I planted some seeds a few days after I started this thread and they are doing well now. Only trouble is, I have 49 shoots... and I move out of where I am liivng in 7 weeks, by which times they will be much bigger. How the hell I am going to get them all back to my parents is beyond me. I think I may be having to give some away.

While I am thinking about it, does anyone know where I can buy these plastic boxes form http://i10.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/f6/8f/e012_1.JPG (or what they are called) I have tried various searches on Ebay but can't find anything.
