Gong back a bit, The Monkees "Alternate title"

The original title was "Randy Scouse Git" and those words don't appear in the song either.

Did you mean that in the sense of the words "Tom's diner" next to each other lyrically or the words "tom" and "diner" themselves? If you meant the latter, well "diner" is said in the first verse - "I am sitting in the morning at the DINER on the corner..."

I bet you meant 'Tom's Diner' as two consecutive words in the lyrics so do apologise for rambling! To continue my ramble, when I was a young lad, I used to think the song was about a girl called 'Dinah' belonging to Tom lol - I was so sweet wasn't I?

One that springs to mind is David Bowie's "Space Oddity." He doesn't mention "space" or "oddity" or say "space oddity" at all during the song, BUT I'll forgive him for that because the title is certainly an example of the tin - it does what it says after all! Major Tom is something of an oddity, and he is in space!

The Mamas & The Papas' "Creque Alley" springs to mind as well. To be honest, the song is probably well remembered for its humourous refrain of "and no-one's getting fat except Mama Cass" so it probably should have been called that! The other bizarre thing about "Creque Alley" is that it cross-references "California Dreamin" - it doesn't mention its own title but mentions one of the other hits. RANDOM, but what a great track.

True Faith - New Order
Blue Monday - New Order

Earth Song - Michael Jackson
New Order have a regular habit of doing this - the cheeky beggars. There's also 'Temptation' by them amongst others.

A few more 80's songs:-

'Kings of the Wild Frontier' - Adam & The Ants
'Shut Up' - Madness.
'Hymn' - Ultravox
'Syncronicity 2' - The Police
'How Soon is Now' - The Smiths
'Being Boiled' - Human League
'Souvenir' - OMD

Wikipedia:

Nash stated in an interview on BBC Radio 1 that the title "Pumpkin Soup" was a working title she had saved on her computer when writing early versions of the song, and that her record company had originally intended to name it "I Just Want Your Kiss" after the main lyric in the song.
