It's a shame for whatever reason that many of the acts didn't get to do the routine they wanted or weren't forced to show they could have equal success with another routine.

Good on Andrew for saying he didn't pick that song.

And shame on the producers for not fixing George's music on time forcing him to do the same routine.”

I totally agree. Same thing happened with Pier Diem the other night when they were told they had to sing First Time Ever I Saw Your Face when they were planning to sing something else.

The BBC have a special deal with major labels that allows them use of a huge catalogue.

ITV does not, AFAIK. Charlie Brooker mentioned it on his show and on American Idol they only just got the rights to The Beatles songs. In fact, they were so excited about that that they did them for 2 weeks!

as regards 'performance' rights 'labels' have nothing to do with it. Publishers are the ones to go to for performance rights. Labels are for playing film or recording of artists.
I thought the 'performance rights were fairly open. Being a musician /songwriter myself i have always understood that I just get a royalty cheque when someone performs my music. some ads and films have had to record their own versions of songs, so as to bypass objections to songs being used. Not totally sure how it all works though

Whatever the reasons, all contestants should be allowed to state what songs/act/music THEY intend to use. The only reason they should be asked to change is perhaps if more than 1 act was using the same music/song.

Andrew said he hadn't wanted to sing that song - Simon said "But you did...." Then Andrew said it was out of his hands. Easy to say he should have stuck to his guns, but less easy to do when faced with program producers etc etc etc all (probably) telling you what to do. I hope he gets another chance somewhere to prove himself.

Sorry, you're quite right about the labels and publishers thing. They need to request rights from the publishers first, and it can't necessarily be done in 24 hours.
