Sorry to start a new thread but in the main show thread people keep referring to George's "sob story" and how winning will have "saved his life". Could someone please tell me what the sob story is and how winning will have saved his life? I missed some of the shows including tonights

I would have asked on the other thread but it seems to be moving at 100mph

I missed this too, I don't listen to the in between chat, just watch the acts and I thought he was great

I watched every show, but I must have missed something.

I fail to see how winning can/has 'saved his life'

It's being covered in my "I worry about George..." thread.

Maybe he's saving it for his 'New of the World' exclusive or something then?

So obviously I haven't missed anything then, just wondered what everyone was on about in the other thread

The backstory they gave him was that if he won he would help his mum's out with the prize money. That and his disappointment of missing out last year and him being so determined to win against the odds. Cowell summed it up by calling him BGT's Rocky. That is the way he has been portrayed.

I heard him say about his mum putting a roof over his head... these comments annoy me. I would prefer to know nothing about the contestants private lives.

That it gives him the chance to make something of his life rather than struggle.

According to another thread, the reason for the 'It will save my life' comment was he's going to use the money to pay back his mother for providing a roof over his head and feeding him.

I'd better start making the preparations to pay back my mum, I thought parents had kids because they wanted them, not so they could get paid back!

Why was his mother planning to send him to the workhouse or something? Seems an odd thing to say doesn't it?

It sounds like sh*te, doesn't it? As I said in my other thread, his mum will probably find Social Services on the doorstep now!

There is an article on DS news about what he said about helping out with money. Plenty of quotes on there.

I didn't realise there was more to his sob story. I think it's sweet he wants to help his mum, but I don't think there was any need for the melodramatic 'It will save my life'.

That's sweet. He sounds like a good kid.

I think the competition in dancing is much greater than singing. Lessons are expensive with no guaranteed return. And unlike singing, you can't just pick it up late in life, you have one shot at it in your youth. If you're good, there's almost no chance to make it as an individual. Even on the West End the money's crap and your career's over by your mid thirties. The only option after is to open a school or something and teach. And it's like anything in entertainment - so much a timing - getting noticed by the right people.

So the BGT and the money will allow him to take more classes, concentrate on his dancing, give him a bit of exposure to dance schools, dance troupes, or whatever and allow him to make the most of his abilities.

"It will save my life" is a bit melodramatic, but I think it will give him opportunities that he would never have otherwise. I think hundreds of young and promising dancers never reach their potential, because of a lack of money, or lucky breaks, or if they do fail to get noticed, and end up doing something else.

Good luck to him.

Sorry, but "this will save my life" was too OTT IMO. Probably worse than Madonna's "this is for my family's survival".

Personally, I am not that arsed with his background story or his intentions with the money. Signature and Andrew Johnson have equally appealling backstories, if you dig this type of thing. They all have good intentions and alot to gain, so to speak.

I am glad he won over the likes of Faryl Smith and Scala mind, as I thought they were very strongly pushed by the judges over the course of the show. He had a good act, tried very hard, seems a decent enough kid and was genuinally popular with alot of people, so he is a worthy winner. In fact, after Leon and Biggins, George is the first decent RTV winner for ages.

One of the hot favourites wasn't he?

Yep, he was. When I say against the odds I mean his rejection last year, and there constant insistence on how determined he is and his family situation, as well as Cowell chucking in the Rocky comparison which is about as corny as it gets. For me, this is all part of this rolemodel angle they have had this year. They have been slipping in this youth of the UK are getting a hard time thing in and the BGT are great rolemodels in angle in all series. Whilst I am describing this backstory, it don't mean I agree with it.
