I know it's probably hypothetical, but should we have non uk nationals in these shows? Or should they be for any one, from any country? Can't imagine someone from the UK being in American Idol, for example.

I did think it was a bit odd. It also puts them at a disadvantage as people from their own country can't vote.

I don't see why not. Both Jessie and Aoife have both done very well in these competitions, and neither of them were from the UK.

The thing about not having their own country behind them - if they're good enough - see both Jessie and Aoife - they'll do well regardless!

that's a good question. i was wondering this as well there are a lot of north americans in England with permanent resident status, wonder if any auditioned.

Yes but the point I am making is that would british performers be allowed in other country's competitions??

Memo to thread:

Read the EU regulations.

FIFA won't be able to bring in the 6+5 rule in football, and Andrew Lloyd Webber couldn't prevent Bulgarian, Portugeuse or Finnish people from applying even if he wanted to.

Of course he could always just not select them for the live shows. I'm sure a few Slovakians and Estonians were culled at the audition stages.

Didn't the recent American Idol series have an irish and an aussie in it?

Yes pure and simple. They replublic of Irland should have been alowed their vote.
It is joined to our country after all. The isle of man can vote and it isn't.
It's stupid. Just because they are independent from us.

Half the people who live in the City of Westminster (where Oliver will be staged) were born overseas. Where exactly do you draw the line at 'Britishness'? Surely the nationality of someone appearing on the West End stage in the worlds' most cosmopolitan city is irrelevant.

That's funny, actually. As an EU resident, there would be no legal way to ban Jessie from the competition.

But Sam is from a non-EU location, and depending on her personal status she is the one contestant it might have been technically feasible to have banned.

English people don't ever back English people. If a Scottish, Irish or Welsh person was in the competition you can bet that their country would be right behind them. England does not seem to unite the same.

Thought they had emigrated and taken US citizenship.

But I might be wrong.

Good job the British public (hopefully) voted on talent and not nationality, unlike last weeks Eurovision song contest.

There were 2 non-UK nationals in the top 3 and neither of them won tonight, however they were not the bottom 2 until last week, when just one of them was. So I think it's OK.

Still think it odd that some people think that the population of other countries should have a vote???

I agree why should other countries have a vote on a UK competition. I am sure that UK citizens cannot vote on Irish competitions.

Thye shouldn't...and perhaps that means that in some ways non-nationals have to almost have more support than the others, as they don't get the vote of the people who would vote because of where they are from before they have even opened their mouths to sing.
