Wonder if anyone can comment on this situation. Is it a problem with my set-up, or have I got a faulty telly that I need to take back to the shop and replace?

Equipment: Brand new couple-of-days-old LG 26" LCD HD iDTV (model 26LC55) with Sony 710 hard-drive/DVD/integrated-freeview recorder. Sony box is hooked into AV1 by SCART. (There is also a non-subscription Sky box hooked into AV2, mostly unused.) There is no source for HD transmissions, yet, so everything describe below is an SD signal.

Got the telly this week to replace my old dying CRT. Since installing, I've noticed that around once an hour, maybe two, the picture & sound will abruptly black out for about half-a-second or so and then go right back to normal. On occasion it will repeat this process a second time about 2 seconds later, but that's it till the next episode. In some cases, the screen will go black, then almost (but not pure) white, before restoring.

This has always happened when I was viewing material from the Sony box. I have not noticed it happening with the telly's iDTV ... but then I'm not sure I've watched enough iDTV to verify that the problem is absent there.

Here's the history. I first noticed the issue when I was playing a home-brewed NTSC DVD on the Sony box, but I hadn't at first noticed it happening with any PAL output. I assumed that it might just be some glitch in the conversion from NTSC, and found that I could reproduce the problem with NTSC DVDs (but not PAL). In fact, the problem still happens more frequently with NTSC material than I have observed with PAL (say, once every 15 minutes).

Today the problem seems to have emerged on PAL viewing from the Sony's integrated Freeview, as well. This was mostly on BBC channels -- but this evening I ruled out MUX transmission issues by reproducing the error once on Channel Five. Here it happens, as I said above, about once an hour or two.

I have double-checked the connections -- all fine. I'm wondering if this is a problem with the hook-up or communication with the Sony box and LG telly ... maybe switching to component video & audio would help? Or have I just got a duff TV? Any thoughts, anyone?

have I just got a duff TV?
You need to establish where the fault lies by spending a bit more time watching the TV using it's own internal tuner so taking other external equipment factors out of the equation.

on page 88 of Sony manual it details 24/25 fps and component progressive

on page 75 of LG manual it goes on about Advanced cinema settings and earlier in manual goes on about simplink

you will need to play about with settings

thanks, guys. currently keeping an eye on the native iDTV ... still don't see an issue there, but giving it more time ... . I seem to have a different Sony manual from the one that niall has, though. There doesn't seem to be an auto-switch setting on the telly, not that I can find, but I have been playing with the Sony a bit.

Ok -- I think I've established to my satisfaction that the iDTV runs just fine, so the problem is not with the telly but with either the connections or settings.

After a few more experiments, I've confirmed that there is not much of a problem when the Sony box plays PAL material ... although it is not entirely absent. The big issue is NTSC material. I've tried switching AV slots, but not to any avail. Does anyone think that switching to component video might make a difference?

Well, I expect it's likely to be something that's being transmitted from the Sony box that the TV just doesn't like, since the TV itself is fine.

Guys ... turns out to have been a dodgy SCART cable! After un-cabling and re-cabling a bunch of stuff in the process of ditching the Sky box and installing a Freesat box onto the system, everything from ran sweet, including in NTSC.
