Sony Erikson T68i
Hi folks,
I've got a few questions about this mobile phone, and would much appreciate replies from anyone who owns one. I really like the look of the 68i and was and still am considering purchasing it - but i've read quite a few reviews and they are disappointing, apparently the reception is very very poor and the phone crashes quite frequently etc. by the way, I was planning to get it on Orange pay as you go. may I also ask about WAP - the mobile internet service, can someone tell me if it is possible to access WAP on Orange pay as you go (just talk) service plan? if yes what are the costs of using WAP (I'm a complete novice here - i mean does one need to sign up with a WAP ISP and pay them a monthly fee etc? ) and secondly, how does one go about activating the WAP on orange just talk? by that I mean would you have to register the phone in order to activate the WAP or anything like that?? reason I ask is because I currently have an orange pay as you go SIM CARD on an old Nokia 3210 phone - what I was hoping to do was get the T68i and continue to use my existing SIM CARD .. The only problem I have is that my SIM CARD was given to me a couple or so years ago by a cousin and can't remember who's name it was registered on and the PIN number etc, although he gave me the details at the time. So I'm wondering, would it be OK if I just inserted my SIM into the new phone and it would work fine and able to use WAP ? eg, without the need to contact Orange custoemr services and that hassle. |

Get the Sony Ericcson T610; it’s the successor of the T68/T68i.
It’s got a built in camera 65k colours Many many more things just look in the T610 thread we all love our T610s and yea it should be fine putting your old simcard into the phone (only if its on orange or what ever network you get the phone on) |

The T68i is as you have learned well know for its bugs and poor reception. Which is a pity as it spolis an otherwise good phone. Also it has only got a 256 colour display wich is poor compared with say the T610 which has 65,000 colours.
WAP on Orange is 10p per minute at all times. (Its used to 5p per min at weekends till Orange decided to rip off customers by hikeing prices for everything. Even used to be able to get text messages for 5P now they are 12p! ) More details of Oranges Rip Off Price Plans here. You dont have to pay any monthly subscription to get WAP, but lets not give Orange any ideas?! You should be able to put your 3210 SIM card into the T68 and it will work straight away. |

Poor reception isn't a problem if you live anywhere vaguely populated. Certainly, it had no bearing on call quality.
At the time, I was warned against fllashing my T68 to a T68i, because the new firmware was supposed to be buggy. But to be honest, I didn't notice it. Yes, phone did lock up on me, maybe 5 times in the year I had it, and only when I was making it do something fairly taxing -- it never just switched off in my pocket. Also bear in mind that I had the very first firmware version that was available. Subsequent releases are likely to be better. All in all, I was impressed enough with the T68i to go for its follow-up, the T610, as my new phone. The T68i also contains one of the most advanced WAP browsers available. As others have mentioned, you do not need a subscription for WAP on Pay as you go. As long as the phone you get isn't network locked (well, locked to any network other than Orange), the SIM you have should work okay. The only thing is that if you haven't used it for ages, you might have to re-register it with Orange customer services. |

Reception isn't as great as some Nokia's but it performed well for me. As for constant crashing, not something I experienced. But then I did ensure the firmware was always up-to-date.Quote:

As far as I'm aware you can pop an Orange SIM into an unlocked (or Orange locked) T68i, visit the Sony Ericsson website and use the configurator to send an SMS message to your phone with all the necessary WAP settings. Quite simple.

Thanks for all the information guys - I very much appreciate it.. and I am a bit of a novice with mobile phone technology I must confess ![]() Quote:

Jose - could I just ask you which Nokias you are referring to here, I currently own a Nokia 3210 and have had a Nokia 3310 as well for a while which have performed pretty well overall.. never had a problem with reception that I recall.. would I experience any noticeable difference in the reception from these if I went for the T68i ??by the way, I am from Birmingham in a densely populated area so I would have assumed the signal strength here shouldn't be a major problem. But I'm surprised at why the T68i has received so much negative reviews on various sites that I've checked... many claiming 'its the worst phone I've ever had!" - surely it can't be that bad ? I would appreciate some final advice as to which phone I should go for... here's the three models that I've shortlisted. Sony T68i - despite the concerns about its reception and other problems, I'll have to admit I really like the looks of it - call it love at first sight , it looks a real cute phone.Nokia 3510i - i'm thinking about this as an alternative, looks reasonable.. only problem for me is the size of it, ideally wanted something smaller and lighter.. - I suppose it is around 50 g lighter than the 3210 I currently have Motorola C350 - looks a bit dull... not particularly attractive, but is small and light and has good all round features I'm told. Thanks in advance, I would very much appreciate any advice to help make my decision easier.. T68i is the one I would like ideally out of the three (judging a book by its cover, there!), but a bit concerned it is inferior to the other two |

It isn't. Yes it did take some time to adjust to Sony's interface but I have to say it's one of the best I've used. The phone has pretty much everything you need and all easily accessible as well as configurable. I will admit that SMS input could be slow at times when compared to a Nokia phone but this didn't bother me much and subsequant firmware upgrades improved this.

I can't really comment on your other shortlisted phones but I would really consider getting a T610 over a T68i if you're worried about it's inferiority. It has all of the T68i's features and size/weight but improves on them no end (polyphonics, better colour screen, larger screen estate, downloadable games, faster interface, etc.). According to other threads in this forum you can get one on Orange PAYG for £160. If that's still too much then go for a T68i and upgrade later.

Hey thanks once again.
I've just bought the T68i - wow, what a cute li'l thing! I can't believe what all the fuss was about! as good a mobile phone as I've ever come across...The reception has been on full bars all day and not just that. I'm astonished by the sound quality.. certainly sounds a lot better than the old 3210, almost like a landline phone.. Great purchase, overall ![]() One lesson I've learnt here - never visit Amazon.com for customer reviews when u are thinking about purchasing something!! its total junk!

Yes I have a T68i and am very impressed with it, haven't had it long - only a few weeks. Bought the camera with it too and a Bluetooth headset.
Works perfectly as far as I'm concerned - signal strength and voice quality is good. WAP/IR/Bluetooth all work fine too. The only annoying thing are those flashing green and blue lights on the top. I have Bluetooth on all the time so it alternates between the green flashing and the blue flashing. If it gets on my nerves I have to hide the phone under something!

You are right, the T300 uses 16 bit Polyphonic ringtones.

![]() If you haven't already, check your firmware by entering the service menu. To do this, from the standby screen, enter >*<<*<* (press left, *, right, right, *, right, * on your joystick/keypad). Select service info then SW information and your firmware version can be found there. Latest is R8A015. Upgrading this (if yours is older) gets rid of most of the outstanding bugs and speeds a few things up. Oh and it's also supposed to add 4 more games.

Same as above. Applies to all Ericsson phones.
Firmware upgrades and only be done at approved SE service centres (Contact SE for your nearest). They are free while in warantee. |

Just tried the above and works ok on my handset... The previous instructions had the right and lefts the wrong way around..... Is there no way of upgrading ur firmware remotely? without going to a approved SE centre?? |

SE Centers
What is the location of SE centers that do the upgrade in london?
I've had my T68i replaced twice in the last 12 months by Orange Care. Shockingly flimsy phone! |

Really?? i have never dropped a phone so many times and not had a problem.... I would never have called it flimsy... That said, my friends t68i (sony ericsson case) has had problems...
Its been a brilliant phone, just one of the early versions.. The ericsson case with the early t68i software.... |
