Oh and "time traveling archeologist" = Vash from Star Trek TNG and DS9.
I thought a time traveling archaeologist was more of a Dr Bernice Summerfield than Vash

I thought she did recognise him straight away with her greeting of "Hello sweetie". I must've misunderstood.
She did, you are right, he still ages so he looks younger than before because she meets this Doctor, say in 3 years time, so he looks younger when she see's him now.

I am probably being way too simplistic with this, but I think she is another timelord, he was wrong to think they were all dead and she is his wife.
She said shall we check diaries in the plural, which would suggest she also flits about in time and they meet up occasionally when and where they can, so she likes to get a check on where abouts in their real time they are whenever they meet up. She just hadnt met him before outside of their own timeline. Does that make sense?

If its not that, then she is another incarnation of the Doctor himself.

Don't know if this has al;ready been mentioned, but the 2nd Doctor used to carry a 500-year diary. Maybe that's the book that River has?

This is what I love about these forums...

...we've come full circle to her being another Time Lord again...

.. in a minute, someone is going to suggest it may be Rose, then the TARDIS, then his mum.... etc.

how about something happens to Donna which makes the Doc look very world-weary by the time he bumps into River Song (whoooo, I dunno, might be his companion during the 4 special episodes next year?).

I think Riversong is the Doctor's wife... he falls in lpove and they marry...so she has to learn his real name... quite probably a human...
i'd think the stress of dealing with davros and the birth of the daleks will be what make the doctor look stretched out when she finally meets him...and probably after Donna dies.

She can't be his final companion. She said it herself; the last time she saw him, he knocked on her door, and they went on a date and she saw him cry; he gave her his sonic screwdriver, and she left for her assignment.

Professor River Song is the embodiment of the soul of the Tardis.

This is why he hasn't "met her" yet. This is why she acts maternal and can always call him and loves him etc.

This is why she lets him know he can snap his fingers and open the door.

This is why her diary book cover resembles the doors of the Tardis.

The Tardis has a song it sings, something Rose found out before when she looked into it's soul. The River is the river of time. Hence Professor River Song.

She also said she went to the end of the universe with him I think she mentioned? That's supposedly where the Tardis graveyards are.

That's also why it appears to allude they are married and why she can be a time traveling archeologist too without being a Timelord and of course knows his real name.

It's also how they can get Rose back..

I'm convinced that if she's any pre existing character she is either the first doctors grandaughter, or his daughter the blonde one, that did lots of back flips.

I still think river song is just river song though. Its not who she is its what she is.

Odd River Song Observation #4567

She said to the Doctor "it always ends in handcuffs". I thought at first this was an amusing reference to the doctor being handcuffed to that thing in the library episode.

However, she couldn't possibly know about that, unless she got out of that computer.

Odd eh?

She mentions that he looks a lot younger, she's no longer with him but has a book (presumably his) detailing everything they'd done, and she has a his sonic screwdriver. Could she be the doctor's companion in the far future when he's old and grey, and did he die when with her?
No. Not unless River Song develops the means for regeneration, or is actually written to be a Time Lord...

I foresee the character of Doctor Who lasting much, much longer than the character of River Song.

I however don't see a time when people remember he's called The Doctor and not Doctor Who.
