When I playback SD DVDs and SD SKY via HDMI (set to 1080p or 1080i) the picture quality is good but when I playback recordings made on the RDRHXD970B - recordings are set to HQ - I experience a problem with the image. Edges of objects & people "tear". I see small black lines on the edges when the object moves. I think this is known as over-stressing. Also if the image moves quickly or changes rapidly eg a firework display the image almost breaks up. When played via SCART the image is fine.

Is there a fault with either piece of equipment or is there a reason why there is a difference between my recordings and DVDS/SD Sky.

If anyone has this combination of equipment I would be grateful for your comments/advice.

Thanks

Have you tried recording in SP mode to see if you get the same effects? I find the HQ mode doesn't really provide any real PQ improvement through HDMI or Scart RGB but seems to introduce more artifacts when playing back.

thanks for the reply.

Have you got the same DVR/TV. Do you experience the same problem. I will try the lower recording mode.

Cheers

I use my HXD970 with a Sony Bravia 46X3500 but I also have the HDMI output on the recorder set at 576p. This is because the TV's upscaler (in my view) is far superior to that of the HXD970, so I let the TV do the work.

The screen resolution on your E50A12U TV I believe is not full 1080p, so it may be the case that you are over processing the output by upscaling on the recorder side then downscaling on the TV. It would be worth you experimenting with the HDMI settings to see if it makes any difference to the HQ recording playback problems you are encountering.
