thanks so much for gathering these clips together. Really interesting to see if there is a different level of talent in the two competitions and just generally fun.

Anyone else find it odd that Samantha and Siobhan both sang the same song in the final and both went out first?

Just another thing to add to the list of similarities between Samantha and Siobhan.

It's a bit scary actually!
1. Both lusted after by a member of the panel
2. Both in their first sing-off in semi-final
3. Saved in that sing-off against the odds (Siobhan over Aoife, Samantha over Rachel)
4. Same song
5. Go out first
6. Both have names beginning with S

Well done Aleksis for pasting all those links.

When i checked out Siobhan's Anyone who had a heart, i was interested that the staging used a single, fairly static male dancer for Siobhan to sing to. This made it much closer to a musical theatre number, rather than the pop music staging of Sam singing to the CAmeraman (or cameramen: most off putting seeing lots of the Nancies whip their gaze 180 degrees when the director changes camera angle)

Maria used this device a lot and it was very effective.
The only time i remember it in IDA was for one of Jessie's songs (? Stop)
I think it would have improved the opportunity to act out the song.

Well you've certainly covered most of the bases there GG. Also, both championed by ALW, particularly towards the end of the series, but dropped like a hot potato by him in the final.

Definitely think the man on stage helps, Sam has a stronger voice but Siobhan's is the better of the two performances overall.

would agree with that... if you could mix Sam's vocal with Siobhan's performance it would be nigh on perfect imo

There are moments in Sam's performance that I really like though; when she sings "loving you the way I do, I take you back", shows there's a good actress ready to come out

Yeah, it's only in the last few weeks, I've been watching youtubes of the Marias and I've realised that they really liked Siobhan. I don't remember that at all from when I watched it, but they really were full of praise.

WOW!

Never watched the Maria show (maybe caught the end of a show here and there) but I can see the difference in the acting if Siobhan is anything to go by in her 'Anyone that had a heart' that was a different class to about 90% of the Nancy's performances.

Nothing like a spot of procrastination to tide the evening by...

“Son of a Preacher Man” - Jodie V Meliz
Until I joined DS and read discussions about HDYSAPLM, I forgot that Meliz existed (despite being an avid watcher of HDYSAPLM). So that enforces my feelings of her performance being pretty forgettable... I do like her voice though! Jodie's wasn't anywhere near her best performance either, but it's much better than Meliz' (I'm not sure if that's down to Jodie's being in week 10, and Meliz' being pretty early on?)

“Cabaret” - Rachel V Helena
Both of these performances are amongst the best of all 3 series! Rachel's vocals are much stronger, but Helena's a much more natural mover. I think I have to say Rachel's has a slight edge over Helena's. The hint of defiance in her performance gives me goosebumps literally every time I watch it!! The part of her performance that follows the "And as for me... line makes me want to give a standing ovation to my Youtube window! Seriously! I watch it and I can't stop smiling!

(also, Helena must be really tall... it takes five men to lift her length-wise. It only takes 3 to lift Rachel... haha!)

“Anyone Who Had A Heart” - Samantha V Siobhan
For final show performances, neither of these made me go "wow"... Like someone else above said, a combination of the two would have been superb! Each one is, to an extent, lacking what the other posesses... If I had to choose one, I'd probably say I prefered Siobhan's overall performance though!

“9 to 5” - Jodie V Leanne
Easily Leanne's worst performance on HDYSAPLM. But she does look cute in specks! Lol! Jodie wins

“Sway” - Samantha V Aoife
Aoife, only marginally. That was one of my favourite performances from Sam. I dunno what it is - I was never that big a fan of Aiofe when HDYSAPLM was on, but when I watch her performances back now I think she's amazing! Perhaps my tastes have changed!

“Big Spender” - Ashley V Abi
Abi, hands down. I think Ashley's interpretation of the song was very entertaining (and very different to most people's), but Abi's was just one of those "WOW" moments. Plus, Ashley's faux NY accent grated a little bit. Abi was just sensational.

“See the Day” - Samantha V Leanne
I don't really like either of these... Leanne has a better vocal, but I prefer Sam's performance.

“Maybe This Time” - Sarah V The Final 3 V Abi
Maybe I am bias, but Sarah's was much better than the final 3's... Had Jessie been given the song as a solo it could have been amazing, but I didn't enjoy it as a "group" number. Sarah's was one of those moments where I sat forward in my chair and thought " Holycrap. She's amazing." Abi's was fantastic, and the choreography in her's was much more difficult, but Sarah wins this for me. I think it's the way she conveys the emotion of the song through her eyes. And her voice is just mindblowing.

“Over the Rainbow” - Keisha/Tara V Simona/Belinda
I never realised before Simona sings the Eva Cassidy version, whereas Keisha and Tara, and Belinda sing the Judy Garland version... It makes it harder to compare them. I actually think Simona's is pretty good but her accent just... doesn't work with the song. Belinda's vocal is spectacular! But the Tara/Keisha singoff was a revalation- maybe Tara can sing! It's difficult, but I think Belinda wins.

“My Heart Will Go On” - Keisha V Helena
Helena wins, because her performance was moving. Keisha's was good, but not emotive enough.

“As Long As He Needs Me” - The Nancies V Connie
Sarah, Fran, Keisha, Ashley, Jessie... they win

I'll leave out the sing offs, because I think the Nancies win every one, just because I prefer listening to altos over sopranos...

Aah, now I should maybe go and do something productive...

Meliz got the song Jodie got in the final and she was in the bottom two the next week and out the week after that - hardly one of ALW's favourites for Jodie then.

Leanne out acts Jodie, gets the accent and sounds better to me and she was only 20 then. Leanne for Nancy.......

Helena's Cabaret does circles around Rachel's and then hits it with a 10 ton hammer.

interesting he gave Keisha the song that took Helena into the final over three people who were beating her in the public vote too. He may have been really keen on Keisha.

I would say exactly the opposite. I thought Jessie's was about a hundred times more charming and fun. Siobhan's was bland and dull in comparison.

SOLO PERFORMANCES.

“Son of a Preacher Man”
One of my favourite songs, Jodie wins this for me.

“Cabaret”
I liked both performances but Rachel just shades it for me. She seemed to perform like her life depended on it.

“Anyone Who Had A Heart”
Siobhan was much better, but I think having the dancer there helped.

“9 to 5”
Jodie again. Jodie just seemed to understand the song in a way Leanne didn't

“Sway”
Aoife can sing, dance and act much better than Sam.

“Big Spender”
A close one here. I loved both Abi and Ashley's versions. Abi just shades it

“See the Day”
Both murder the song. Leanne bludgeons it less.

“Maybe This Time”
I love both Sarah and Abi's version. Jodie saves the trio from being completely awful. Sarah wins just by virtue of being my favourite IDA performance.

“My Heart Will Go On”
Helena and Keisha both did a great job, Helena just shades it.

“As Long As He Needs Me”
The Nancys. I don't think the song suited Connie at all.

SING-OFFS.

“Another Suitcase in Another Hall”
Rachel and Niamh win only on the basis that Rachel was by far the best of the four.

“Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”
Siobhan & Aoife win as Aoife was the best of the four. Can't believe Aoife went after this

“Memory”
Rachel & Sam was probably Sam's best performance, Rachel was amazing as with Aoife can't believe she was put out after this.

I've just watched HDYSAPLM via you tube and I was truck by how many more songs were from musical and how many of the routines had complicated chreography when compared to IDA.

The other thing that struck me was that the top 5 in HDYSAPLM looked like the best five. I don't think that of IDA or ADWD for that matter.

I don't know what it is my head tells me Jessie has a better voice etc but it didn't do anything for me.

I think I found it a bit too sweet. Gwion certainly brought that, the kids Siobhan sang with weren't so cutesy.

Yeh I agree. I think it was probably the way that Jessie and Gwion sang it that made me like it better, Siobhan kind of said some of the words rather than sung them and it was very slow, it got a little bit annoying for me anyway.
Also Jessie and Gwion's routine was cute, although I thought Siobhan did very well also.

I think that they both have good vioces. But Siobhan has a higher vioce.

Siobhan and Jessie's voices were very, very different, but both excellent in their own way. I just found Siobhan rather bland as a performer, whereas Jessie was always very engaging.

I agree that Gwion was an important factor in making that duet what it was. I thought his sweetness worked very well with Jessie's slightly rough and tumble quality. Siobhan and Gwion might have been far too saccharine. Jessie paired with the Chitty kids mightn't have been charming enough.

However, I'm still bitter that Abi wasn't chosen to do that number in Maria. I feel sure I would have loved her version.
