Help connecting portable DVD player to Toshiba LCD TV
I've managed to do the above by guessing which cable (audio and video outputs) go where and I'm getting sound and a picture on the TV. The problem is the picture is black and white!
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? There is a "spare" black connection on the video cable but there isn't anywhere obvious to plug it in and plugging it into the holes I've tried doesn't make a difference! Can anyone help? Vicki |

Most SCART-equipped televisions or VCRs (and almost all of the older ones) do not actually support S-Video, resulting in a monochrome picture if such a connection is attempted, as only the luminance signal portion is usable. Generally, a monochrome picture in itself can also be a sign of incompatible color encoding — for example NTSC material viewed through a PAL-only device. are you simply using red/white and yellow connections? red and white is audio and yellow should be s video s video carries the picture |

Being a portable DVD player I'm assuming the connections you will have will be 3x phono connections, one red, one white sometimes black and one yellow, the red/black and white are for audio, the yellow is for the video.
You can connect in two ways, connect the three phonos in to a scart adapter and then connect this in to a spare scart on the back of the TV, or you could connect the three phonos directly into the TV, most TV's have the three inputs, mostly found on the side of the TV. If these aren't the cables you are using a description of what they are would be helpful. |

Yellow will be composite not s-video.
Black should be s video then and they must be using composite at the moment if the black is still available. |

sorry got it wrong then,i don't bother with these cables,i only use newer cabling,i've picked up loads of them over the years with graphic cards etc..
Black should be s video then and they must be using composite at the moment if the black is still available. My guess is it's yellow (composite) and they have this connected correctly as they are receiving a picture, it may be a setting in the DVD player that may need altering. Could be the player is set to s-video. |

Hi there.
Thanks for all your replies. I'm not techie at all so I don't understand the differences you're describing here. The spare black connector is attached to the same cable as the yellow connector. The red and white are both in the red and white connections on the tv and are in the audio output hole on the portable dvd player. I've got the yellow connector in the 'component video input' hole on the TV (it has a Y next to it). If you don't think I'll get colour - am I damaging anything by watching in black and white? Vicki Yellow = Composite (Y). Have you gone into the dvd player menu settings and looked at what is selected for video output, it sounds as if s-video is selected or something other that can not be passed via composite, you need it set to PAL or composite if the option is there. |

Unfortunately I can't get into the set up menu as my remote control needs a new battery and there's no set up button on the machine!
The TV is new so I don't want to damage anything - should I wait until it's set up correctly? Vicki |
