Depends how you define heated I suppose

If there wasn't any swearing or shouting I wouldn't think it was too heated!!!!

Tone of voice is usually a dead giveaway as well as facial expressions.

Unless you're a very odd person indeed

Interesting stuff about protective parents. Both Ben and Jessie's parents need to back off. Stage parents are the nightmares of most directors and producers and will reflect badly on the performer. It'll be in the back of everyone's minds that working with said actor, no matter how talented, may not be worth the effort if one has to endure the tantrums of their parents.

I also think parents need to realize that when their child puts themselves on a televised audition, they will receive really harsh criticisms, whether fair or not, in exchange for incredible exposure and instant celebrity-dom.

I guess we should be so lucky that it wasn't Tara's dad that was pulling the tantrum.

Your second point is all very well in theory, but it's an emotionally charged situation and it must be horrendous for the parents to sit and listen to their child being pulled apart on national TV. I'm sure the powers that be understand that and if they react, pay it no attention.

I don't think you can compare a one off little alteration with a nightmare parent.

I also don't think for one minute directors and producers who by the way are not wilting violets would bother one iota about the parent. All they care about is having the right person in the part! They would have ways and means of putting the parent in their place!

As a parent, I think that I would have had something to say to John.

As an employer, I would have been worried if one of my employees was behaving in this way. The comments in the initial weeks were acceptable. It was only in the semi and the week before that I would have been worried that things were getting out of hand.

It is not so much each comment individually, but the implied and direct critisism when discussing something else. Jessie would no doubt have felt singled out (especially with this being in front of 6 million viewers).

There is a fine line between critisism and bullying in the workplace - and this would have been very close to that line.

I thought I read somewhere in this thread that the Olivers weren't allowed to go to the wrap party?????

I think that her dad said it to JB in the studio when he came up to Jessie after the show finished.

Totally agree with you Barry. I'm also a parent and an employer. As a parent he would have had a piece of my mind for singling out my child so unprofessionally and as an employer he would have been disciplined for his outwardly prejudicial and somewhat childish behaviour towards a junior collegue.

It was not at the party but in the studio after the live show.

I think of all the contestants bar Sam Jessie had the easiest ride from the panel. Its a tough industry if they can't take the criticism (which I imagine in the real industry) is a hundred times worse then they should find another career. They are all adults they really don't need their parents to fight their battles.

I totally agree and honestly I never once thought any comment Jessie got crossed the line - unlike with some of the other contestants.

Sam is like a shark and you are like a fish flopping on the side...

Are you seeing a line?!

It could have been expressed more tactfully, but I agree with the gist. Sam struck me as the more mature girl, more focused.

If the role was to go to one of the younger competitors, I would rather it had gone to Sam, not because I thought she was better, I didn't, but because I thought she would be able to handle things better.

I could hardly believe my ears when he said this.

First rule of reality tv John, never use a fish metaphor. There's just no need and it makes you look stupid. There's always a way to get your point across without involving fish. Always.

I agree, Sam was very level headed for a 17 year old, as with Niamh too. I think in Jessie's defence she probably wasn't used to criticism. She came from what seemed like a big happy family, small town in rural Ireland, went to a convent boarding school and was the star in the school and town productions. You could see that when she got told she was in the final 12 she was still a bit raw from getting rejected by drama school when ALW mentioned it. Saying this though, she will need to toughen up a bit for the future.

I don't think anyone on the panel was as harsh as Zoe Taylor was in past series. Can you imagine what Zoe would've said to Jessie about that "corner of the mouth" singing? I thought it a valid comparison between Sam's focus and Jessie's inconsistency, and Jessie's going to have to deal with much harsher comments in the real world. As a co-star, which is how I think John sees his role, consistency is more important than flashes of brilliance. All he's said about Jessie since the competition is that he doesn't think she's ready for the West End, not that she's rubbish.
