Bought above TV in May, had engineer out within 4 weeks with the following fault, although when he arrived the fault didn't happen!

When I switch on TV the screen appears out of focus for about 3-4 seconds and there are diaganol lines across it. I've seen these lines on an old TV when I was a kid, this has immediately put me off the TV.

Any suggestions as to the fault please, I'm tempted to ask for a new one??

Thanks in advance!

You shouldn't get those lines or focus problem of course, sounds like something either isn't quite set properly (A1 /G2control perhaps) or maybe something a little more serious.

Does it only happen when the TV is turned on from cold ? or does the fault occur if you've used the TV then turn off and on again?

Make a note of when it does it and call the retailer again.... a fault like this probably won't get any better and more likely get worse.

However some TV's do start up a tiny bit out of focus for a second or two but not with the flyback lines that you mention.

This is almost certainly the TV doing it's degaussing when switched on.

From cold a TV will degaus the screen to remove magnetic effects that distort the picture. This process can cause havoc with the guns when switched on. Some TV don't display a picture soon enough to see the effect whilst others start up fast or the degaussing goes on a little longer. I believe some use a thermal trip mechanism so that the degaussing switches off when the thing is warmed up hence the TV won't degaus when it is switched back on straight away after being switched off, it has to cool down first.

Sony's have a tendency to "grunt" when switched on cold and the degaus kicks in. When switched on from warm they don't "grunt".

Since the TV is normal after 3-4 seconds (this isn't that long a time for a CRT startup really) you don't have a problem or fault.

Thanks for the advice, it happens when the TV is cold and both the out of focus and fly back lines last only a few seconds. It is annoying!!

oops.. I misread the posting and assumed it had flyback lines all the time...

Keep an eye on the TV and if it does this more and longer I'd possibly call the shop....

As comicsansserif says, Sony's make a noisy 'grunt' when turned on from cold....
