Maybe we could all agree to keep the downloads on the other thread and then we could chat freely here on the basis that if someone comes on here before watching the downloads they run the risk of reading spoilers?

Or thinking again - perhaps we should have a thread each week to discuss that week's show like we do when it is live?

So far I'm enjoying that the shows focus on performances, Maria School, and the panel making decisions, and not on the contestants' personal lives. Hopefully that will continue.

there are little back stories, but basically experiences.

i think every show has them, and we will have to see how the weeks progress. as soon as I saw Janna talk about her grandmother i had a thought of Connie and her nan. (lol)

lol--Janna seems to be being compared to Connie a lot. It's okay by me, because at least for now she's my favorite (as was Connie).

People do seem to forget, though, that Connie wasn't the first contestant on the BBC Maria whose grandmother was shown on the show--actually it was Helena's grandmother we saw a few episodes before we ever met Connie's.

Now parents, grandparents, etc. seem to be a staple on these sort of shows, at least the BBC versions. I wonder if the same will hold true for the Canadian version.

It's much better than the UK version, it must have a good director /producer who concentrates on the girls, very little time spent on anyone else.

I'm much prefering the way this show is edited than how it's edited on the BBC; like someone above said, it's much more focused on the abilities of the girls and their strengths/weaknesses, rather than how much weight they've lost or how proud their parents are. Hopefully that'll continue!

Standouts for me are Janna and Marisa (sp?) from the first two shows. Marisa's version of cabaret was very poorly sung, but excellently acted! And I definately get the Janna/Connie thing. I'm also really liking Katie, but I think that's because of her personality ( I know, I shouldn't judge based on that!) She'll probably be picked on for her age by the pannel though. And I'm not too keen on Jayme (Jamie?) but I can't give a particular reason... I'll see how she does next this week! Lol!

The Canadian girls seem to be much more calm and collected than the British ones, there weren't too many tears or overreactions! Also, how awkward that they have to go back into the room with all the other Marias!?

I like them all too at the moment! I'm so glad that Jennifer (excuses girl) and Dana () got cut.

At the start they said most of the girls had been studying for years with only a few that were 'raw', so maybe that experience helps them to cope better. It could also be down to the editing.

I can't get over how high the standard is! Of the girls that got through, I don't think I thought once "OMG her singing is awful"

true, but honestly if i had never ever seen Connie, my first pick from first moment of seeing her sing and talk would be Janna.

was anyone as shocked as i was that Stacey was not picked? and the amazing singing of the Mother Abbis voice type?

i truly feel, that as the live shows go on there may be more back stories come out, i could be wrong, but we may see some.

I'm really liking this show so far, but I don't see its focus on the contestants' abilities over their backstories as a departure from the BBC format as much as a return to the original idea. The original Maria show had very little of those family/friends/sob story angles, and we only met a few of the contestants' relatives (Helena's and Connie's grandmothers and mothers, Abi's mother, Aoife's parents) later into the live shows. It wasn't until ADWD and IDA that these backstories started getting more prominent, and were brought up in the audition stages before we even saw what the contestants could do talent-wise. This lack of "sob stories" is one major reason why I've thought that the first Maria show was by far the best of the three BBC casting shows, and it's nice to see the Canadian version going back to that.

I think there were so many talented contestants they could afford to leave out anyone with the slightest glitch - Stacey's lisp and Janel (mother superior) voice was not 'Maria-like' enough. Just my thoughts.


I thought it must be my memory as I couldn't remember many back stories from our Maria school.

I agree with the Mother Superior voice not being right but they wanted Emilie opera voice in HDYSAPLM and she was ugly. also, the shock on Stacey's face - they kept the camera on that for a while. I know she had a lisp but there was something about her and......

that was a sobby back story, the broken jaw in 7 places or whatever being put back into place and her learning to do it all over again. maybe that's why i was surprised she didn't make it.

also, i can see over one or two others.

This latest Lloyd Webber Canadian quest makes it four .. does that make it a quartet or quadrilogy
or quadrillion or what? I presume the people who want the links have found them, they are worth having to make the set.

I think Janel said she could adapt her voice to Maria but I'm not sure she had a chance to do that - I thought she was fab. I remember Emilie and her strops LOL! Wasn't she the one who wrote a letter changing her mind after being chosen??? GN made a meal of reading it out on the show LOL!

I think poor Stacey was gobsmacked not to make it and she just turned and walked away - what a shame, I'd have liked her to have a go at it.

I hope they put tomorrow night's show up for download quickly! Will the result of the voting be announced the same night or on a different night?
