Veal - do you eat it?
Do you eat veal?
I love veal, had some the only other day. Have been eating since a kid. Just watching The F-Word with their segment on veal. |

Is that the controversial meat? what's it like? It's hard to describe the taste as it has a taste of its own, very nice though. |

We usually buy it from one of the local butchers, the market or very occasionally one of the local Asda stores which has a butcher section.

Veal is a by-product of milk. Male calfs are worth nothing to the farmer of a dairy herd, unless he can sell them for veal. They're obviously no good for milk. And dairy cattle do not provide the same quality of beef as beef cattle, so it's not like he can rear such calfs for sale as beef.
I think veal has a bad reputation in this country, based on historical reasons and bad treatment of the calfs. But the laws have been changed now. So they are not treated as badly as in the past. And if we don't eat veal, those calfs will just be shot when they're born. |

Veal is beautiful, the cruelty angle is overdone and Veal calves are usually slaughtered at about the same age as Lambs, something people don't seem to realise.

Not watched fword yet, but will. its recorded.
I've not eaten veal i dont think but do want to, just so the calfs dont die for no purpose at all, and it give the farmers dosh to actually look after their livestock. Veal unjustly gets a bad name. |

I have never had it, but would love to try it. May try it next time we go for an Italian.
Is it more tender than, say, fillet steak? |

I've eaten veal and as long as it isn't raised in cruel conditions (i.e. in crates) I have no more of a problem eating it that I would lamb.

veal is lovely. i haven't eaten it in years though. What is interesting is that nearly all of the male calves born as a bi-product of dairy farming are exported abroad cos no one wants to eat them here.
A lot of people don't eat veal cos of the cruelty angle, yet these calves have to endure long journies on lorries so they can be eaten abroad. I never realised this, I shall certainly be looking out for veal again now. |
