I take it to mean a set of speakers consisting of a subwoofer that contains the amplifiers for the rest of the speakers, probably 5 small (satellite) speakers, for a 5.1 system.

Cheers Sub means subwoofer - a unit that is designed to play bass below a certain frequency - usually under 150Hz, for arguments sake. Sat, or satellite to give the full name, is a speaker that is not designed to play the full frequency range and must, therefore, be used in conjunction with a subwoofer. Satellite speakers can vary from the tiny fag-packet-sized rubbishy speakers you see lining the shelves of Dixons to top of the range M&K active monitors that come in at £2195 each! Even the most expensive satellites (from the likes of M&K) are designed to do little below 80Hz - at which point the subwoofer takes over. Matt. |
