Hi Knowledge seeker.
I watched it quite closely the first 3 weeks. Ive just sort of switched off. It wasnt a decision or whatever. Just drifted away cos its very predictable and boring.
THe public vote is sacrosanct in every other country. I doubt any other country will use Arnies format. THe public participation keeps the shows alive. The whole show may be rubbish but eviction night and the crowds are always special.
Our BB (and every BB) is always evolving but the problem is we dont like the changes for the most part. All these ideas from the producers spoil it mostly.
The question is, why was BB Australia brilliant ?
BB UK was extremely boring, but so is BB USA. I mentioned I followed it on the forums last year and it was pretty good. But I think part of that was the novelty of the format too, which perhaps is what the others on this board are going through this year. THere were some really interesting characters last year tho. I would say Roddy, Dani, and Marcellas were extremely flawed so maybe that was the main factor.
The TV ratings for BB UK over here were high despite it being a disaster. I suspect BB has loyal followings but I also suspect that the trend will be that everyone stops watching in a short period rather than the the ratings drop with a slow curve. We all watched on expectation but we might not be as loyal next year.
Ive watched Hungary and Latvia too. Latvia was pretty good but they continually replace contestants so have a thriving house which changes dynamics, until they start to evict them. Also the last time they avoided the empty house by making the last week the final 6 or whatever. But Im getting bored with Latvia too. I also watched Hungary and that wore off a bit as well (possibly the language barrier). Latvia was quite interesting though.
People go on about Will on BB USA 2 but it was the choice of a lesser evil. I wasnt meaning HoH would win it. In fact its probably wiser not to become HoH because they make enemies. I didnt follow BB USA 2 so I cant say how each HoH went etc, but theres always going to be 2 or 3 left. Somebody has to win it. THat year it was Will so lots of people said it was brillliant. Maybe if one of the placid girls was left at the end then the placid girl would have won 10-0.
Personally, I dont see reasonable tactics (except not making enemies) that they can use to avoid being nomd. The best option is a secret alliance with someone and not making enemies, but even still a lot of it is luck. Anyone who sticks out is probably going to get the boot.
E4 only started showing BB USA after BB UK was finished. It was showing BB UK feeds 24/7 before that.
Heres what Arnie said about his format versus the rest
" You know what's amazing about that? They are copying us. We really
don't know very much about what the European & South American shows are doing.
We don't get tapes & look at them. Occasionally we'll hear something but what
we do here more than not, they are taking format things that Allison & I & our
team create & using it. American Export. It's funny because the show comes
from Europe. It comes from the Netherlands but clearly this is, as a matter
of fact, let me see if I get this right Allison, our Internet feed now goes to
Great Britain as do the American version of the show. Airs on Channel 4 even
though I believe they have their own 'Big Brother' which they just completed &
now they're going to run ours. We're already getting emails saying you're
already so much better than the one in Great Britain. I mean, I'm not saying we
got thousands of emails. That is some of the feedback we got. "
If I was a BB producer I would be closely following all the other BBs to get ideas.
heres what he said about the internet folk and his way of judging feedback
" MF: Do you guys ever go read the Internet sites to read public reaction of
the show?
AS: Various Producers on the show read the Internet sites frequently. I'm
told I get bashed a lot & seem to take, no matter what they don't like I seem
to get blamed for. So I don't read them.
MF: You're the Head Honcho so I guess people think the buck stops here.
AS: So I don't read them but other people read them. It's nice, we're not
doing the show for ourselves. We're doing it for the millions of fans &
viewers, including the Internet people, & we care what they think. Obviously we
don't like when they misconstrue or misinterpret something & think we are doing
something for a reason we're not. Or in 'Big Brother 2' we got accused of all
kinds of things from the Internet people that weren't true. Like they said
the HGs were mistreating Ophelia the pig & it wasn't true at all. "
Im not sure why they gave up on the normal BB format in the USA after just one season. I think you guys would have grown to like it more. Possibly one problem was that it was on a flagship channel ? (CBS ?) where it had to have certain ratings, whereas over here its on a minor channel so was deemed a success. Survivor flopped over here cos it was first aired on a flagship channel and altho the ratings were reasonably high, they were lower than the channel was used to.
Its not a USA v UK thing of course. Its about Arnies format and from what Ive read in that interview, his attitude.
One thing about USA BB is that the BB competitions are much much better.
Maybe it all comes down to personalities. BB USA 4 may have been a lot more exciting with Scott around. I think they need either/or very charismatic people or unstable people possibly.
